Cannes. Home to the international film festival. Playground of the rich and famous. Movie stars. Luxury yachts. Pristine beaches. And you. That’s right. You. Without a reservation and with one hand on my wallet I arrived in Cannes wondering if I could afford a short stay. What a surprise! Moderately priced hotels just two short blocks off the beach. Fabulous restaurants with seaside umbrella tables and unparalleled service! Cannes is absolutely affordable! If you know the inside scoop. As it turns out Cannes?prices in shoulder season aren’t much different from those you’d find in Myrtle Beach or Malibu. And the off-season sacrifices were minimal. Except for Film Festival time in May, high tourist season ends in September. But the summer weather does not. Mid-October temperatures were still in the low 70s. The water was a bit cold for me to take a dip in the Mediterranean, but others did. And a great advantage was the greatly reduced crowds and traffic!
It only took one circle. The Cannes Garden Hotel is a wonderful 80 room property just two short blocks up from the beach. The yellow and peach three star hotel is a little retro, a little deco and very Miami Beach. Normally 125 euro ($141) in high season, we paid just 80 euro ($90) per night for a deluxe double room on a Thursday and Friday night. The room was large by European standards and had a veranda big enough for a table and chairs. Pink and green lights on the hotel opposite ours spilled color across the many palms and bougainvillea in the lush courtyard garden below. The bath was a newly renovated, bronze marble with a large shower and fluffy towels. And a bonus -- because the hotel wasn’t fully booked, management offered complimentary parking right on the grounds. The main shopping thoroughfares, Rue d\'Antibes or Boulevard de la Croisette, were less than a 5 minute walk. Lingerie, jewelry, fur and a host of other uber-upscale couture boutiques sat waiting. A friendly Cartier salesman, enjoying a respite from the high season tourist crunch, allowed me to try on all kinds of frosting while he entertained with stories about his vacation home in Barcelona. But the beach across the street soon beckoned. Encasing the sand is the elevated Cannes beach walk, which is really a wide cement boardwalk that pedestrians share with bicycles, dog walkers and roller bladers. Look up the boulevard for the large square yellow building. That’s the Palais des Festivals, film festival hall. Just want to rest and enjoy the scenery? Plop down on one of the bright blue painted benches conveniently situated for the walking weary. And don’t forget to glance at what’s for sale. Original oils paintings were the dominant medium and the artists were willing to make deals. A soothing, unframed, 12?x 16?painting of a flower covered veranda overlooking the sea was a steal at just 50 euro ($55). Shopping works up an appetite and Cannes offers plenty of ways to satiate gastronomic desires. Diner-like places and fast food stands are scattered along the Boulevard. But why not soak up the flavor of Cannes and live, if just for a little while, like the exotic moneyed creatures that frequent this lux land? The way to not max out your credit card is to have lunch, not dinner, at one of the fine restaurants on the water. We had our pick. Another reason to embrace shoulder season? At the Plage Royale there was no wait. We chose an umbrella table on the beach terrace and immediately took off our shoes in order to wiggle our toes in the warm sand. Cannes beach may be a bit narrow, but the bronze colored sand is large grained and very fine. After all, gritty sand in Cannes would simply not do!
water, listened to waves break, and watched sailboats ?nbsp; for three hours! The price of lunch, complete with celebrity-worthy treatment and atmosphere? For a glass of wine, appetizer, salmon salad, and horrendously decadent portion of ice cream, not to mention hours basking in nearly private elegance?about 40 euros ($45). A bit pricey for lunch, but we spent half the day on the beach there as guests of the restaurant. And if you’re going to Cannes, you might as well do it right. And definitely do it. You Cannes afford it! Cannes Garden Hotel
