If your kids love burgers and ice cream, try making this easy, no-cooking-required dessert recipe with them. It¡¯ll be a hit!
Ingredients (makes enough for a family of 4):
8 small round waffles, frozen (or waffle mix and necessary ingredients)
1 ? cups of strawberries, frozen or fresh
2 teaspoons of granulated sugar
? gallon of chocolate ice cream
1 pint of whipping cream
? cup of confectioners sugar
other materials:
1 large mixing bowl
1 electric hand mixer or whisk
1 food processor or mini-chop
plastic wrap
measuring spoons and cups
toaster or oven
Before you start trying to make this, take a moment to imagine what this is going to look like, and how all of the ingredients will function when the burger is all put together. The waffles will act as the burger bun, top and bottom. The chocolate ice cream will be the burger patty. The strawberries and granulated sugar will be pureed to look like catsup and the whipped cream will be mayonnaise. Ice cream oozing with ¡°catsup¡± and ¡°mayonnaise¡± will be a yucky delight for the kids. Now that you better understand how this will come together, gather up the kids and start ¡°cooking¡± those ¡°burgers.¡±
Steps:
1) Make the whipped cream/mayonnaise: Pour the whipping cream into a large bowl. The bowl should have high sides to help prevent splattering from occurring during mixing. If you are using a hand mixer, which will get the job done faster, lower the beaters into the liquid cream before you turn it on, otherwise the cream will splatter. Turn the mixer on at a high speed and take turns holding the mixer until the cream starts to thicken slightly. At this point turn off the mixer and help the kids measure out ? cup of powdered sugar. Pour it into the bowl, lower the beaters, turn it back on at a high speed and continue taking turns beating the cream until it is thick. Once it is thick enough cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate.
2) Make the strawberry puree/catsup: Take the 1 ? cups of strawberries and rinse them if they are fresh. If they aren¡¯t, you should begin thawing them for at least 30 minutes before beginning the project. Let the kids measure the strawberries and granulated sugar, then put them into a food processor. Put the lid on the food processor and turn it on until the strawberries are pureed. Store the puree in the refrigerator.
3) The burger patty: Lay down one piece of plastic wrap for each child and dish out 1 scoop of chocolate ice cream onto it. Help the kids wrap the ice cream inside the plastic wrap and them pat the scoop into a burger shape. The patty need not be the perfect size or shape, just a close approximation will do. This should be done fast, the more the kids handle it, the more the ice cream will melt and the harder it will be to shape and the bigger the mess it will make. Once patties are formed store them in the freezer.
4) Toast the waffles: let each child take turns putting their buns into a toaster (if you don¡¯t have a toaster, let an adult put them in the oven) until the buns are slightly crisp.
5) Assemble: Put the frozen patties on the bottom waffles and center them. Drizzle catsup over the patty. Next spread mayonnaise over the top bun and place the bun mayonnaise side down on top of the ice cream.
6) This step is the best one. Eat and enjoy! |
