When holiday time rolls around, folks are bustling about in an attempt to finish Christmas shopping and prepare for, perhaps, one of many parties. The preparation for such a party is only part of the effort that goes into its successful presentation. Before that can be done, we must develop lists of decorations, activities and refreshments to be served. If you*re looking for something new in the way of holiday beverages for this year*s celebrations, consider these suggestions to brighten up your yuletide menu. While the actual recipes are not included here, descriptions are provided, and recipes can be found in cookbooks or online.
WASSAIL
This delightful 每 and traditional 每 Christmas beverage combines a variety of ingredients that will warm the hearts, as well as the tummies, of those who partake of its spicy goodness. Typically concocted with a variety of ingredients which include cider, allspice, cinnamon, nutmeg, citrus fruit, sugar and cloves, there are many variations which may include the addition of your favorite alcoholic beverage.
This beverage is intended to be served hot, which is quite often accomplished through the use of a crock pot. If you*re planning to use this type of vessel, be sure to keep the heat low if you*ve added alcohol to the mixture. Otherwise, this element of the drink will evaporate and change the presentation of the Wassail.
CHRISTMAS PUNCH
There are many varieties of this holiday beverage, but the basic recipe typically includes cranberry juice, pineapple juice, lemon juice, ginger ale, water, sugar, cinnamon sticks and cloves. This particular version is intended to be served chilled, but there are other varieties of Christmas Punch that are meant to be presented as a hot drink.
Some of the other versions of the beverage include gelatin or lemonade and, still others, incorporate alcohol into the mixture. Many people include the addition of chunks of fruit in the beverage, as well, in order to offer a more festive presentation.
EGGNOG
As in the case of most other beverages, there are a number of versions of eggnog. One of the most common 每 and most basic 每 varieties include ingredients such as egg, milk, vanilla, sugar, salt and nutmeg. Some folks enjoy a bit of liquor in the mixture, but even this ingredient can change from one person to another. Typically, such additions include brandy, rum, rye or bourbon. When using rum, the dark version of the alcohol works best with the recipe.
Nutmeg is another optional ingredient, although this spice lends a great deal to the flavor of the beverage. Confectioner*s Sugar is another ingredient that may be used in the creation of the beverage 每 again, this adds a wonderful element to the overall flavor of the finished product.
CHOCOLATE EGGNOG
This is a great variation on traditional eggnog, which most kids don*t care for. It should be served chilled and can include some fun holiday garnishes to bring a bit more excitement to the presentation when serving it at party time.
The ingredients are very simple. Begin with your favorite eggnog recipe (prepared eggnog can be bought and used, as well) 每 minus any alcoholic elements. Then, blend chocolate drink mix into the mixture and add a holiday garnish.
Youngsters may not appreciate its more traditional cousin, but they*ll love the chocolate version of the drink. This is a great beverage idea for children*s holiday parties.
GLOGG
This yuletide beverage is one of Scandinavian origin and includes a strong portion of liquor in its recipe, although there are various presentations of the drink. This is not a drink that would be appropriate for a family gathering that includes children, as a result of its high alcohol content.
One of the many variations of this drink includes dry sherry, bourbon, red wine, cardamom, sugar, cloves, cinnamon sticks, sugar, raisins and almonds. Intended as a hot beverage, this will need to be kept warm on a low temperature 每 so as not to violate the integrity of the alcoholic ingredients 每 or reheated in a microwave before serving, but should be removed before reaching the boiling point.
GLUEHWEIN
This hot German/Austrian beverage is suitable for the adult crowd, and should not be taken too liberally, as the effects of the alcohol can manifest themselves quite suddenly. As with the other hot holiday drinks, this is ideal for a cold winter*s night for those who plan to stay indoors with family or friends.
Based on a few simple ingredients, such as red wine, sugar, water, cinnamon sticks, orange and cloves, this is a popular beverage at a number of ski resorts, as well as with those who are of a European heritage. Be sure to preheat the mugs before adding the Gluehwein, however; otherwise, the mugs have a tendency to break.
PEPPERMINT PUNCH
Here*s a delightful holiday beverage that*s suitable for the entire family 每 although it poses a problem for folks who are lactose intolerant. This would be a nice addition to a children*s Christmas party, or just for get-togethers which include youngsters.
While there are variations on the recipe, the three basic ingredients are peppermint ice cream, milk and ginger ale. The combination may seem strange, but it*s actually quite good and is reminiscent of the floats that we used to order at the soda fountains of days gone by. One wonderful variation on this recipe is the use of ice cream that contains peppermint flavored candies, as opposed to ice cream that simply contains the flavor of peppermint. Either way, it*s a big hit with kids, and most adults enjoy it, too.
CAROLING WINE
After a frosty night of caroling, this makes a marvelous hot drink for those who need a bit of help warming up. There are a number of ingredients in the basic recipe for this beverage, which typically includes red wine, pineapple juice, orange juice, oranges, allspice berries, brown sugar, water, cloves, cinnamon sticks and salt.
Due to the presence of alcohol, this isn*t considered to be suitable for children, but is a great holiday beverage for adults, and is really quite delicious. Caroling Wine serves as a great substitute for the more ordinary Christmas punch drinks that are served during holiday parties.
TOM & JERRY
While the name of this beverage may leave you with the belief that this beverage is designed for children, it*s actually only suitable for adults, as a result of the alcohol content in the mixture. There are several varieties of this winter drink, all of which seem to target the adult population.
One of the popular versions of the drink includes eggs, rum, brandy, confectioner*s sugar, water, vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg. When mixed, Tom & Jerry resembles a variety of eggnog 每 and uses a large number of eggs in the making of it 每 but has a different presentation due to the inclusion of liquor. Unlike eggnog, this yuletide beverage is served hot.
HOT BUTTERED RUM
This traditional winter beverage is a wonderful addition to any holiday party or yuletide gathering, but is appropriate for adults only. While there may be different versions of the drink, the basic ingredients are the same, and the drink should be taken moderately since the sweet taste 每 which masks much of the alcohol 每 can be deceiving.
Ingredients typically include rum, brown sugar, margarine, salt, cinnamon, cloves and heavy cream. In order to keep this drink hot enough to be served throughout the duration of a party, a crock pot can be used 每 but be sure to keep the temperature on low so that the integrity of the alcohol isn*t compromised.
These and many more will delight your holiday guests, and provide the catalyst for exciting gatherings and memorable yuletide moments. |
