Mixed drinks are an art that very few of us have yet mastered. We have become spoiled with those pre-packaged ¡°mixers¡± that we find at our local liquor or grocery store. Simply add the liquor to the mix and shake. Granted, these mixers make things a lot easier, but no drink tastes quite as good as a drink you have made from the proper ingredients. Here are ten of the most common mixed drink recipes for you to memorize so you can dazzle your friends with your liquor knowledge at the next party.

Martini

James Bond made them classy and the ladies of ¡°Sex and the City¡± made them chic: the martini. Take ? ounce of dry vermouth and 1 ? ounces of gin and stir (or shake in a cocktail mixer, as Mr. Bond prefers) with ice cubes. Strain this into an already chilled martini glass and serve with a twist of lemon or a few olives. 

Mojito

It seems like everywhere you look lately, bars are having mojito happy hours and people are having mojito parties. Take 3 sprigs of mint and lightly stir with 2 teaspoons of sugar and a splash of soda water until the sugar has dissolved. Squeeze 1 ounce of lime juice in the mix and add 2 to 3 ounces of light rum. Shake this mixture up with ice and strain into a glass of ice. Top with another splash of soda water and a mint sprig. 

Margarita

The margarita is one of those drinks that never goes out of style. Rub a margarita glass with lime juice or the lime rind and dip the rim in salt. Shake 1 ? ounces of tequila, ? ounce of Triple Sec, 1 ounce of lime or lemon juice and ice. Strain the mixture into the margarita glass.

Long Island Ice Tea

For a drink that really packs a punch, get yourself a Long Island Ice Tea. Mix ? ounce each of tequila, light rum, gin and vodka and the juice of half a lemon. Pour this mixture over ice and add a splash of Coke. 

White Russian

If you want the drink made famous in the movie, ¡°The Big Lebowski,¡± then try a White Russian. Mix 2 ounces of your favorite vodka with 1 ounce of a coffee liqueur and pour over ice. Top off with light cream and enjoy. 

Mudslide

For another sweet mixed drink, try a Mudslide. In a shaker, combine cracked ice, 2 ounces of vodka, 2 ounces of Kahlua and 2 ounces of Bailey¡¯s Irish Cream. Shake and pour into a glass that has been chilled. 

Strawberry Daiquiri 

For a Strawberry Daiquiri, combine ? ounce of Strawberry schnapps, 1 ounce of lime juice, 1 ounce of light rum, 1 teaspoon of powdered sugar and 1 ounce of fresh strawberries. Shake all of the above ingredients with some cracked ice and strain into a chilled glass. 

Pina Colada

This drink was so good they made a song about it. ¡°If you like pina coladas...¡± In a blender, combine 2 cups of ice, 3 ounces of light rum, 3 tablespoons of crushed pineapple and 3 tablespoons of coconut milk. Blend for about a minute and pour into a chilled glass.

Bloody Mary

In a shaker, combine 3 ounces of tomato juice, 1 ? ounces of vodka, a dash of fresh lemon juice, ? teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce and a few drops of tabasco sauce. Shake and then strain into a glass.

Lemon Drop

In a shaker, combine ?  ounce of Absolut Citron, ? ounce of sweet and sour and crushed ice and strain in a glass. On a slice of lemon, sprinkle ? a teaspoon of sugar. Drink the Lemon Drop shot and then quickly suck on the sugared lemon.
