Coffee has been around for longer than you might imagine -- dating back to as early as 300 AD! It is no wonder that it has only gained popularity through the centuries, as it has been refined and perfected so that we can enjoy a delicious and fresh cup of coffee, along with its powerful aroma, right in the comfort of our kitchens. Americans have had coffee in their homes since 1680! You certainly do not need to go to an expensive cafe to have an exquisite cup of Joe. Here are some tips for making a great cup of coffee at home:
- Get a grinder. If you have a grinder at home, then you can have fresh ground coffee any time. Whole beans stay fresher far longer than ground coffee. Also, you can decide how fine you want to make the grinds. The finer the grind, the stronger the coffee. Just don't make it powder-fine, or you run the risk of clogging a filter.
- Store your coffee beans in an air-tight container. When you buy coffee, it is usually in a bag, and once you open it, you will be leaking the freshness unless you transfer it into an air-tight container. Store coffee in a cool, dry place. Contrary to popular belief, storing coffee in the freezer is not a good idea -- the flavor will fade.
- Experiment with flavored beans. Vanilla and hazelnut are the most popular flavors, but there are many others, such as Irish creme, cinnamon, and Dutch chocolate. You can also combine flavors to make your own unique blend. Try blending raspberry beans with vanilla. If you like only a slight hint of flavor, combine a regular coffee, like Colombian, with a flavored bean. You can also add a little cocoa powder or cinnamon in with your ground coffee before brewing, which adds a hint of flavor to the brew as well.
- Add a jolt to your regular cup of coffee by putting a shot or two of espresso into the cup. You can buy excellent home espresso machines that are easy to use, and there are also several models that have both coffee and espresso/cappuccino functions. This beverage is often called an Americano.
- Use steamed or frothed milk in your regular coffee. If you don't like the strong flavor of espresso, you can still enjoy frothed or steamed milk. For the best results in frothing, use cold skim or low-fat milk. Pour the milk into a metal frothing pitcher, and keep the nozzle at the top of the milk, bouncing gently up and down to get maximum results. It will produce a hiss-like sound when properly executed. Do not let the nozzle touch the bottom of the pitcher, though, or you will not be able to get a good froth going. If you just want the milk steamed, keep the steaming nozzle in the middle of the milk. This is often called a Cafe au Lait.
- Fill your coffee cup halfway up with coffee, and then fill to the top with hot chocolate. Garnish with whipped cream and cocoa powder. This is commonly referred to as a Cafe au Chocolate.
- Keep your coffee maker clean. Run a cycle of water through without any coffee grinds in the basket from time to time to get it rinsed out. You can also buy products to brew through the machine if you start to notice a change in the taste of your coffee.
- Experiment with gourmet coffee beans. Coffee beans differ based on the region, climate, and altitude in which they were grown, and the method of cultivation used to grow them. You will find different tastes from different beans. Try Kenya compared to Sumatra beans. Try French Roast compared to a breakfast blend. Also, remember that the darker the bean, the stronger the coffee.... that is why espresso beans are the darkest of all.
- Experiment with various methods of preparation. The automatic-drip machine is the most common, and it works very well. Percolators are another brewing option. The negative side of a percolator is that it requires boiling water, which can make the coffee taste bitterer. A French press is a great coffee-brewing tool, and it is said to produce the purest flavored coffee. A French Press uses a filtering screen to press the beans through hot water, so there are no passages for the water to travel through that could potentially alter the pure flavor. These are very affordable devices, and you can even buy a thermal French Press so that you can keep your coffee hot and fresh! |
