Building up the perfect home bar is a demanding task. The many types and varieties of alcohol may seem daunting, but it is rather easy to build up a basic bar, with only a few ingredients. Once you have the basics, you should feel free to experiment with new mixes and additions, until you create a home bar that suits your own needs and tastes. Here is a checklist of some of the basics that you'll need, if you want to create and maintain your own perfect home bar.
Liquor
The basis of any home bar is liquor. Liquors are stronger alcoholic drinks, usually with a fairly high alcohol content, and can be used for mixed drinks or served alone. Although a variety of high-end liquors are available, bottles of alcohol do not necessarily have to be very expensive for them to be good quality. When starting out, try to amass a selection of popular brands of alcohol, then experiment with alternate brands and labels until you find ones that suit your tastes. Here are the most common varieties of liquor, many of which can be combined into a wide number of bar drinks and martinis.
Vodka: Vodka is one of the main staples for a beginning home bar. With a very light taste and almost no aftertaste, vodka is a great basic ingredient for a huge number of drinks and mixers. Try mixing vodka with different types of juices for light mixed drinks that pack a punch. Vodka can also be served with tonic or can be mixed with Kahlua and milk to make the famous White Russian.
Rum: Another favorite for the bar scene, a bottle of good rum is essential for any bar. There are two varieties of rum, dark and light, and each has its own distinct taste. Light rum is a bit sharper, and not as sweet as dark rum. It is used in mojitos, the classic cuban drink of white rum, mint, sugar, and tonic water. Dark rum is thicker and sweeter, and generally goes well when mixed with coke or other sweet beverage. Try a mixture of rum and english tea, called grog, which is an easy to make warm alcoholic beverage.
Tequila: For shots, nothing beats an aged blue-agave tequila. Although the top of the line tequilas are often very expensive, classic tequilas do not have come with a huge price tag. The classic tequila shot is served with lime and salt, but for a sweeter alternative you can try serving it with orange slices and cinnamon. Tequila is also a great addition to a variety of mixed drinks, including the Tequila Sunrise, which has tequila, orange juice, and Grenadine.
Gin: A versatile alcohol with a slightly bitter taste but an ultra smooth texture, gin is perfectly suited for dry drinks. From a simple gin and tonic, which you can spice up using bitter lemon or lime tonic, to the gimlet, one of the simplest and yet most elegant martinis. Add fresh lime juice to a martini glass of the best gin, mix, and serve. The best gin is undoubtably Bombay Sapphire, which not only tastes great, but has a deep blue bottle which looks killer over your bar.
Martini: Another fantastic alcohol, with a sweeter taste and a smooth texture. Martini can be included in killer mixed drinks or just served with ice and a slice of orange. The most well known variety is, of course, the self-named Martini. For extra style, be sure you serve the beverage in a triangle-shaped martini glass, along with an olive or orange garnish.
Mixers
No bar is complete without a wide range of mixers, enabling the bartender to create a wide number of drinks and beverages. You'd be surprised at how much difference a few extra mixing ingredients make, so don't forget these important additions to your bar. Orange juice is possible the single most used mixer, being included in everything from the basic screwdriver (Vodka and OJ) to the more complex Tequila Sunrise. Cranberry juice is a popular base as well, and can be added to Vodka or Gin, or mixed with a variety of liquors for the famous Long Island Ice Tea. Milk can be used in White Russians as well as with Bailey's or Khalua.
Beer
Finally, a home bar shouldn't just be about liquor and alcohol. There are a variety of beers that can be a great alternative to martinis and mixed drinks. Try to amass a collection of international beers to go with your drinks collection. Corona, Sol, Dos Equis are all great Mexican beers, which can bring a Latin feel to a summer party or just afternoon drinks with friends. Leffe Blonde and Hoegaarten are delicious Belgian blonde beers, with a lighter taste and sparkling texture. The best Pilsners come from the Czech Republic, and include Budvar, Pilsner Urquell, and Staropramen.
Sp feel free to try out new beverages and drink recipes, and decide what you like best. After all, your bar should be an expression of your own taste and preferences, so personalize it any way you wish! |
