Home to hundreds of wineries, California¡¯s Napa Valley is leading gourmet trends in both food and drink. The ideal growing climate of Napa is home to not only some of the best grapes in the world but also to a wonderful variety of other fresh produce. This abundance of superior ingredients has spawned an abundance of fine restaurants and an array of packaged gourmet food products including oils, dressings, sauces, mustards, preserves, honey, candies and bakery goods. 

Located about two hours drive northeast of San Francisco, the approximately 185 square miles of the Napa Valley is comprised of several areas including Calistoga, Napa, Oakville, Santa Rosa, St. Helena and Yountville. All of the cities are home to numerous wineries, bed and breakfasts, gourmet restaurants and several boast excellent spas. Natural hot springs abound in the area and the rolling hills are host to beautiful hiking and biking trails for those inclined to outdoor pursuits. The rural area also hosts quaint shops with local crafts, antiques and other local products. 

Fall is the most exciting time to visit Napa Valley as harvests begin in September and grape pressing continues into November. Harvest season ends in November with the Napa Valley Wine Festival, where local vintners offer tastings of many local products. Spring is quite temperate and is also an ideal season to visit the area. 

Wine

Best known for being the premier wine producing region of California, the Napa Valley is home to hundreds of wineries. The selections range from large commercially produced wines to small family run vineyard offerings. While many Napa wines from larger vineyards are readily available across the country, others can only be purchased by on-site visitors or by mail-order. 

The area is associated with multiple wines, as many grape varieties thrive in the excellent soil and environment of California¡¯s wine country. Some of the whites for which the area is most known are Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Fum¨¦ Blanc, Gew¨¹rztraminer and Riesling. The reds include the popular Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel as well as Pinot Noir, Merlot and Beaujolais. Napa vintners are also producing an increasing number of both red and white Ports.

If you are a fan of sparkling wine, Napa Valley¡¯s Domaine Chandon is a must-visit winery. Located in Yountville, Domaine Chandon was the first California sparkling winery opened by a French Champagne company. The elegant and scenic winery grounds include a regular tastings in the salon, tours, a four-star restaurant, a gift shop and exhibits from local artists. In addition to a full selection of sparkling wines, several varietals are offered. 

The Niebaum Coppola Estate Winery offers the Centennial museum, which has historic wine-making artifacts from the Inglenook winery as well as film-making items from the Coppola family¡¯s collection. The tasting rooms are in the beautiful 1882 Chateau on the grounds. For a more leisurely tasting experience, a wine bar offers a European caf¨¦-like environment. The winery offers several labels, and has something for every connoisseur¡¯s taste. The Niebaum Coppola Winery is located in Rutherford, just north of the town of Napa. 

A visit to the large Sterling winery starts with a ride on the vineyard¡¯s aerial tramway. Providing panoramic views of the valley, the tram sets the mood for full immersion in the wine-making process. A self-guided tour leads visitors to their choice of three tasting rooms and a wine shop that sells exclusive offerings. Home to multiple labels and varieties, Sterling tempts visitors with membership in their wine club. 

For those seeking a smaller, less commercial winery, there are still plenty of places to visit in Napa. Grgich Hills offers several different wines and has expanded substantially but retains the commitment to excellence that earned them the best white wine in the world in 1973. The Grgich Hills tasting room is casual and friendly; the staff offers a light-hearted approach to tasting. 

To access many of the highly sought after Peju wines, it is necessary to visit the Peju Province Winery in Rutherford. This winery experience includes a beautiful garden filled with marble sculptures and fountains and a tasting room in one of the most unique buildings in Napa, the 50 foot Tower Tasting Room.

Napa offers fine wines for every taste. Winery maps are available at most local shops and restaurants and guided tours are available for those who don¡¯t want to plan their own route.  

Beer

Napa Valley is home to several microbreweries. With the same craftsmanship and attention to detail that made Napa¡¯s wineries world-famous, the breweries are creating award winning ales, pilsners, lagers, porters and stouts. If you are visiting the area, stop into a local brewpub to enjoy the combination of tasty food and a delicious microbrew, along side some of the famous winemakers of the area. Especially at harvest time, the inns and pubs are filled with thirsty workers from the local vineyards. Visit the pub at the Calistoga Inn for offerings from the Napa Valley Brewing Company and try the Silverado Brewing Company for exceptional suds as well as great food and a thorough wine list. 

Gourmet food products

Napa Valley is home to some of the finest gourmet restaurants in the United States. The appealing climate, location and the wine culture have attracted some of the most innovative chefs in U.S. cuisine today. If you are planning a visit to Napa, balance your dining experiences between the fine gourmet restaurants and casual pubs and cafes, but make sure to make your reservations early. Some of the best restaurants are booked months in advance. 

Several of the local chefs have branched into packaged products, selling their gourmet mustards, dressings and sauces to the public. A variety of wine-inspired products including wine preserves and wine-based sauces have also found a market in the area. Local wildflower honey from Napa bees is a delicious treat, as well.

The same climate that creates great grapes is hospitable to olive crops. Napa is home to some of the premier producers of California olive oils, presenting the finest in extra virgin olive oil. When paired with the exquisite local vinegar, a salad can truly be turned into a Napa experience.
