Martinis have become a very popular drink again, and many restaurants include a list of "martinis" on their drink menu, but chances are that these are not true martinis. Rather, they are mixed drinks served in a cocktail glass. What makes a real martini? It depends on what you're looking for. Try the following drink recipes.
Dry Martini
1 2/3 oz Gin
1/3 oz dry Vermouth
Stir the gin and vermouth with ice in a shaker and strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with an olive.
Sweet Martini
1 oz Gin
1 oz sweet Vermouth
Stir the gin and vermouth with ice in a shaker and strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with an olive.
Dirty Martini
2 oz Gin
1/4 oz olive juice
Stir the gin and olive juice with ice in a shaker and strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with olives.
Gin and Tonic: A gin and tonic is a standard, frequently ordered drink in most bars. With only two ingredients, it's very simple to make.
2 oz Gin
5 oz tonic water
Pour gin and tonic water into a highball glass filled with ice and stir. This drink is typically garnished with a lime wedge, but can be garnished with a lemon wedge, as well.
Vodka Tonic: A simple variation on the gin and tonic. Also very simple to make.
2 oz Vodka
5 oz tonic water

Margarita: A south-of-the-border that is a favorite at many Mexican and American restaurants and bars. You can alter the recipe by adding different types of juices for strawberry, banana, and mango margaritas.
1 1/2 oz Tequila
1/2 oz Triple Sec
1 oz lime juice
Coarse Margarita salt
Run the lime juice around the rim of a cocktail glass, turn the glass over, and dip it into the coarse margarita salt. In a shaker, combine tequila, triple sec, and lime juice. Shake and strain into cocktail glass. Garnish with a lime wedge.
Cosmopolitan: A classic cocktail.
1 oz Vodka
1/2 oz Triple Sec
1/2 oz lime juice
1/2 oz cranberry juice
Combine ingredients in a shaker and shake vigorously with ice. Pour in a cocktail glass and garnish with a lime wedge.
Bloody Mary: The only way to eat your vegetables and have a drink at the same time. A spicy drink with tomato juice.
1 1/2 oz vodka
3 oz tomato juice
1/4 oz lemon juice
1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
3 drops Tabasco sauce
Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice. Strain into a tall glass filled with ice cubes. Add salt and pepper to taste and garnish with a celery stalk, olives, or a lime wedge.
White Russian: A rich, creamy, coffee tasting drink. This drink is often ordered as a dessert drink.
2 oz Vodka
1 oz Kahlua
Cream
Pour vodka and Kahlua into a glass filled with ice. Top off with cream.
Sex on the Beach: A cool, fruity drink that has become very popular.
1 1/2 oz Vodka
1 1/2 oz Peach Schnapps
2 oz orange juice
2 oz cranberry juice
Combine ingredients in a shaker and mix thoroughly. Pour over ice into a tall glass and garnish with an orange wedge.
Long Island Iced Tea: A very alcoholic drink that tastes like iced tea. Be careful not to have too many!
1/2 oz Rum
1/2 oz Vodka
1/2 oz Tequila
1/2 oz Gin
1/2 oz Triple Sec
1 oz sour mix
Cola
Pour all alcohol into a tall glass filled with ice. Top off with cola and stir.
Pina Colada: A frosty tropical drink. Great for anyone who likes pineapple or coconut.
2 oz Coconut Rum
2 oz pineapple juice
1 oz cream
Mix all ingredients together over ice in a highball glass. This drink can also be blended together with ice in a blender and poured into a margarita glass. Garnish with a slice of fresh pineapple. |
