Fancy bowls are nice, but they aren't nearly as fun and unique as an edible food bowl. Check out some of these ideas for serving bowls that you won't have to wash!
BREAD BOWLS
You can hollow out a loaf of bread, either homemade or store-bought, to be used as a bowl for dips, soups, and salsas. This method works best if the consistency of whatever you are putting in the bowl is somewhat thick, like a creamy potato soup. Most salsas and dips are thick enough, but some soups might be too thin, such as a canned chicken noodle soup, and your bread might get very soggy and begin to leak. Here is a recipe for a basic Bread Bowl:
Bread Bowl Ingredients:
- 7 Cups All-purpose flour
- 4 Teaspoons Sugar
- 1 Teaspoon Salt
- 3 Teaspoons Butter or Shortening
- 2 Packets Active Dry Yeast
- 2 Cups Very Warm Milk (about 130 degrees)
Directions:
1. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt, and butter or shortening.
2. Add the milk, and stir until the dough is easy to handle.
3. On a floured surface, knead the dough for about 10-12 minutes.
4. Rub butter all over the surface of your kneaded bread dough, and put the dough into a mixing bowl, covered with a towel or cloth.
5. For about one hour, place the bowl in a warm place so that it can rise. When it is ready, you should be able to press your finger into the dough and leave an indentation, and the dough should be double its original size.
6. Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
7. Shape the dough with your hands so that it conforms to the loaf pan you are using. Lightly butter the dough again before baking.
8. Bake for about 30 minutes.
9. Allow the bread to cool slightly, and then use a sharp knife to hollow out the center, turning your loaf into a bowl. If you want to make a covered bowl, use the top crust that you have cut out to form a lid.
** Keep in mind that you can use various types of bread to make your bowl, but it is important that the bread has a somewhat hard crust.
TOMATO BOWLS
Tomato bowls are very versatile. You can hollow out a tomato and fill it with cold cut meats and cheeses. You could fill them with grilled chicken and vegetables, or with pasta and sauce. You could fill a few tomatoes with different dips, dressing, or salsas. You can also make the tomato bowls either raw or cooked, depending on the stuffing you are planning to use. Try this recipe for an Italian grinder tomato bowl, which is a delicious low-carbohydrate meal choice:
Directions:
1. Cut off the top of a tomato, and remove the insides (make a large enough hole in the top so that you will be able to stuff ingredients into the tomato without ripping it).
2. Cut up 2 slices of ham and 3 slices of salami.
3. Shred 1/8 Cup of provolone cheese
4. Chop up 2 Tablespoons of onions
5. Chop up 1/8 Cup Iceberg lettuce
6. Combine the ham, salami, cheese, onion, and lettuce in a bowl.
7. Add 1 teaspoon Italian dressing, and 1 tablespoon of mayonnaise.
8. Fill your tomato with your stuffing. Serve cold.
GREEN PEPPER BOWLS
Green peppers can be used in the same way as tomatoes. One of the most popular recipes for peppers is a rice, beef, and tomato stuffing. Try this recipe:
Directions:
1. Cut off the top of a green pepper, and take out the insides.
2. In a separate bowl, combine 1/4 cup diced tomatoes, 1/4 cup cooked ground beef, 2 tablespoons tomato sauce, and 1/4 cup baked white or brown rice.
3. Fill your pepper with the stuffing. Sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese on top of the pepper.
4. Bake the pepper for 20 minutes at 350 degrees, or until the pepper is softened slightly.
5. Serve hot.
WATERMELON BOWLS
Watermelons make very strong bowls. You can use them to hold a fruit salad, or even to hold a punch. Cut a watermelon in half, and you have two bowls. Spoon out the watermelon to the desired shallowness. When you use a watermelon as a punch bowl, your punch will have a great hint of watermelon in it. Try this watermelon punch recipe:
Directions:
1. Cut a large watermelon in half, length-wise. Hollow out your watermelon to make a shallow bowl, but leave about one inch of pink watermelon in the bottom of your bowl to give your punch additional flavor.
2. Pour the following into your bowl in equal portions, so that your melon bowl is halfway full: ginger ale, lemon-lime soda, raspberry ginger ale.
3. Pour equal portions of the following into your bowl, until it is a little more than 3/4 full: vodka, champagne or sparkling wine, orange juice with lots of pulp.
4. Add fresh fruits to the punch until it is full, such as sliced strawberries, sliced apples, raspberries, watermelon chunks, pineapple chunks, or blackberries.
5. Serve over ice.
CHOCOLATE BOWLS
Chocolate bowls are great for those of us with a sweet tooth! It is really simple to make these. Buy some chocolate melts, and melt them in a large bowl, so that the bowl is filled about 1/4 of the way up. Put a slightly smaller bowl inside the larger plastic bowl with the melted chocolate in it, and press the smaller bowl down, so that the chocolate seeps up the sides of the bowls. Cool in the refrigerator until the chocolate hardens, and then carefully remove the top bowl, revealing your chocolate bowl. The plastic bowl is a little flexible, so you will be able to easily remove the chocolate bowl from it by lightly bending the bowl. Keep refrigerated until you are ready to serve. Ice cream makes a great filler¡ especially since it is cold, and therefore will not melt the bowl too fast!
As you can see, there are numerous ways to create edible bowls. Try experimenting with other food items, such as potatoes, mangos, and coconuts. Be creative, and enjoy your delicious bowl recipes! |
