As an international city with students and professionals from all over the world, it goes without saying that Strasbourg has a jumping nightlife.  In fact, the narrow streets of the city hide a large number of bars and restaurants, as well as nightclubs and discos that are bound to please the enthusiastic visitor.  So the next time you're looking for a pleasant or surprising night out in Strasbourg, take a look at these locations.  

Trois Brasseurs: A traditional brewery and restaurant upstairs and a large, noisy, drinking hall downstairs, the Trois Brasseurs is a great place for friends to meet after a long day.  The restaurant serves a whole menu of Alsatian recipes, including the specialty of the house: tarte flamb¨¦.  A pizza crust with cream sauce, bacon bits, and mushrooms, the tarte flamb¨¦ is the perfect accompaniment to the smooth Alsatian beers, many varieties of which are brewed and served on the premises.  Downstairs, loud sports fans and locals turn the drinking hall into a party every night.  Be warned though, the place is loud and can get rowdy late at night.

L'Abbatoir: This hip, trendy lounge has a definite Oriental feel to it.  From the cushions lining the floor to the silent movies projected on the walls, the entire bar is an example of artistic expression.  One can choose between low benches or cushions, reclining and relaxing in the cool atmosphere.  The drinks menu is extensive and includes a variety of cocktails and mixed drinks.  One can even rent a hookah, an Arabic water pipe filled with flavored tobacco.  Choose between apple, mint, peach, or a combination of fruits to turn your evening out into an exotic adventure.  Located right next to the canals and the center district, L'Abbatoir is a great way to start the night off right.

Cafe Francaise: This small, crowded, and smoky bar is one of the most popular locations for French and foreign students in the city.  The laid back atmosphere, mixed with a young and friendly clientele, makes anyone feel welcome, as long as you don't mind the constant clouds of cigarette smoke rolling through the air.  Take a drink, pull up to a table, and start a conversation with someone new.  Here, you'll always have friends waiting, even if you haven't met them yet.

Le Trou: Translated as 'The Hole', this lively bar and dance club could more accurately be called 'The Oven'.  Brick-lined walls and an underground location make this place sweltering hot, even in the dead of winter, but the enthusiastic and cheerful crowd that packs into the club every night doesn't seem to mind.  Come early and pick out a table, or just show up, and throw yourself into the mix.  Le Trou is definitely one of the hottest spots for dancing and drinking in the city.  

Salamandre: Another large dance club near the university, Salamandre attracts a student crowd for its themed nights on weekends.  Though relatively quiet during the week, the place transforms on Friday night into one of the largest collections of young Erasmus and international students in the city.  Check the schedule posted outside, for events and costume nights, as there is usually something special brewing at this youthful location. A range of DJs spinning all sorts of music create an eclectic atmosphere.

Cafe Angel: Don't let the name fool you, Cafe Angel is much more of a bar and nightclub than a cafe.  It is also one of the only places to dance salsa in Strasbourg, and thus it draws a large crowd of regulars into the place almost every night.  Spicy Latin music, friendly international dancers, many from Spanish-speaking countries, and a fully-stocked bar make this a great place to dance the night away.  Keep it cool though, the owner is likely to throw out anyone who causes trouble.

Freres Berthomes: This Belgian bar, located right in the center of town, has a great traditional feel to it.  Decorated with wooden beams, benches, and a variety of old posters and pictures, the place maintains a historical atmosphere.  Even with its two stories, it is often difficult to find a free table, so come early and stay for a while.  The menu features a huge selection of Belgian and Alsatian beers, as well as many imports.  Try the flavored beers, a Belgian specialty, or one of the drafts.  You can't go wrong.
