New Mexico is a vacation paradise. Billed as ¡°The Land of Enchantment,¡± it is a land of many contrasts. Technology research sits side by side with ancient cultures. Blistering deserts are in sight of cool mountains capped by snowy peaks.

New Mexico is the 5th largest of all 50 states with 121,598 square miles. It is impossible to tour the entire state in a day or two or even a week. In fact, it likely will require more than one trip even to touch the surface of the wonders of the state. For this reason, we¡¯ll divide the state into six distinct areas with a brief description of each.

Southeast New Mexico:

One of the best known attractions in New Mexico is the Carlsbad Caverns National Park near Carlsbad. Here you¡¯ll find some of the largest caves in the world, containing majestic stalagmites and shimmering stalactites. And the daily bat flight from the caves is truly spectacular.

Equally magnificent is the White Sands National Monument near Alamogordo. At White Sands you¡¯ll marvel at the largest natural reservoir of gypsum in the world, almost 300 square miles. Enjoy the drive through a portion of the most spectacular part, playing in the sand, and picnicking at designated areas.

Other sights in southeast New Mexico include The Three Rivers Petroglyph National Recreation Site, the world's richest quarter-horse race in Ruidoso Downs, and the 2nd largest ski mountain in New Mexico - Ski Apache at 12,000 feet.

Lincoln County is widely known as "Billy the Kid Country," where he grew up and fought in the Lincoln County War. But you¡¯ll have to travel north to Fort Sumner to visit his gravesite and explore the Billy the Kid Museum.

Capitan hosts The Smokey Bear Historical Park, and Roswell is the home of the International UFO Museum and Research Center. Don¡¯t miss Alamogordo¡¯s New Mexico Museum of Space History. Also of interest is the White Sands Missile Range, home of testing for numerous Department of Defense research and evaluation programs.

Near Cloudcroft you¡¯ll find the National Solar Observatory, and not far from Carrizozo you can visit the Valley of Fires lava flow, Three Rivers Petroglyph site, and the gold-mining ghost town of White Oaks.

Southwest New Mexico:

Southwest New Mexico is truly Old West Territory. Again you may visit Billy the Kid country since he hung out for a time in Silver City. And don¡¯t miss the Cliffside dwellings carved into the rock of the Gila Mountains by 13th Century Indians (now called Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument).

Las Cruces, the second largest city in the state, was named for the crosses raised in memory of a group of travelers from Taos who were massacred by the Apaches. The beautiful city is in the Rio Grande River valley in sight of the majestic Organ Mountains.

If you like ghost towns, visit the old gold mining towns of Mogollon, Kelly, Kingston, and Chloride. The beautiful little town of Mesilla, near Las Cruces, is where Confederate soldiers raised a flag calling it the capital of both New Mexico and Arizona.

Northwest New Mexico:

Here you¡¯ll enjoy Indian country at its finest, a region that holds a wealth of Native American culture. Be sure to visit Chaco Canyon where the ancient Anasazi lived. 

In this corner of the state you¡¯ll find America's largest Indian reservation, the Navajo Nation.  Also visit the Zuni, Acoma, and Laguna pueblos, and the Jicarilla Apache Nation. And don¡¯t miss the city of Gallup, where you¡¯ll be amazed at the abundance of Native American arts, history and culture. 

You¡¯ll want to visit Four Corners, the only place in the United States where four states intersect. It¡¯s fun to touch four states at the same time. 

In San Juan County, you¡¯ll be amazed by Ship Rock, a beautiful spire of volcanic rock rising 1700 feet above the desert. And while there, be sure to visit Mesa Verde National Park. These ancient cliff dwellings, called cliff palaces, are some of the best preserved and most interesting you find anywhere.

North Central New Mexico:

If you like to ski in the winter or trout fish in the summer, this is the place for you. Some of the best skiing in America is found at Taos Ski Valley, Ski Santa Fe, Angel Fire Resort, Red River, and others. Then in summer the beautiful mountain streams are a haven for fly fishing, camping and just relaxing amid the fabulous scenery.

Absolutely do not miss the beautiful city of Santa Fe, the state capital. Here you¡¯ll visit North America's oldest church and world-renowned art galleries. And near Taos, be sure to visit Taos Pueblo which was continuously inhabited for more than 1,000 years. Throughout this area are numerous pueblos, lived in today by descendants of ancient cultures.

Then go up into the Jemez Mountains to visit the ultra modern Los Alamos National Laboratories, the birthplace of the atomic age. Nearby Los Alamos, visit the cliff dwellings at Bandelier National Monument.

Northeast New Mexico:

Leave the mountains behind and explore the rolling plains of the northeastern part of the state. Here are the wide open spaces of western lore. You¡¯ll find evidence of old cattle drives and you¡¯ll find working ranches and the most spectacular sunsets in the world. 

Visit an extinct volcanic cone at Capulin Volcano National Monument. Also in this area you can see the deep wagon-wheel ruts left by pioneers traveling the Santa Fe Trail. At Fort Union National Monument near Las Vegas you¡¯ll find army post ruins from the fort established in 1851.

Central New Mexico:

In the middle of the state, is Albuquerque, the ultra-modern largest city of New Mexico. The attractions of Albuquerque are almost too numerous to recount. These include the Kodak International Balloon Fiesta, the World¡¯s Longest Tramway, Sandia Peak Ski Area, along with museums, performance halls and art galleries. Though modern in every way, Albuquerque retains the culture and heritage of the past.

The city of Albuquerque is nestled between the Sandia Mountains and the Rio Grande Valley. Within easy driving distance are pueblos, ski slopes, areas for hiking or picnicking, or just relaxing. Old Town Albuquerque offers the best in arts and crafts, restaurants and shopping.
