New Jersey is a small state, but this should in no way be considered a bad thing. Because it¡¯s so close to New York and Pennsylvania, there is no shortage of fun things to do and interesting places to go, places that don¡¯t require hours and hours of travel time or overnight lodging. If you¡¯re interested in learning about day-trip options from New Jersey, read on for a sampling of activities and attractions that are only a tank of gas away.

New York City isn¡¯t just the place in which folks from New Jersey commute to work, it also happens to be the cultural capital of America. In fact, if you were to do all the things there are to do in the New York City, you would have to travel back every weekend for a year, and you still wouldn¡¯t see it all. There¡¯s nothing wrong with trying, however. Start in lower Manhattan and work your way uptown. Visit the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Wall Street and the South Street Seaport. Lunch in one of Soho or TriBeCa¡¯s trendy restaurants or browse the vendors along Canal Street in Chinatown. If you¡¯re lucky you might happen upon a street fair in Greenwich Village where you can see street performances, sample local delicacies, and spot flea market bargains.  Don¡¯t forget to give your regards to Broadway. Take in a play or musical, the theater district has something for everyone. Shop in Times Square. You may even spot a celebrity when you¡¯re having dinner in one of many midtown eateries. After dinner, visit Lincoln center and catch an opera or ballet. There are so many possibilities. Depending on where you live in New Jersey, New York City is anywhere from 15 minutes to three hours away, so there¡¯s no excuse not to visit.

If the hustle and bustle of the city isn¡¯t what you had in mind, why not get away from it all and travel a little further north to Bear Mountain in New York¡¯s Hudson Valley. Depending on what part of New Jersey you happen to be departing from, Bear Mountain is a one- to three-hour drive. Here you get all the beauty and tranquility of the country without having to travel too far. Activities at the park include hiking the Appalachian Trail, swimming, boating, ice skating, and cross-country skiing. There¡¯s even a merry-go-round. There are trailside museums featuring a zoo showcasing rescued animals that cannot be returned to the wild. One can also view the remains of Fort Montgomery, a revolutionary war fortress.

Nestled in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains, only a couple of hours outside of New Jersey, is the Brotherhood Winery, the oldest winery in America. In fact, it¡¯s been in operation since 1839! Visitors to the winery can stroll the grounds, taste the award winning wines, and tour the underground cellars. This is definitely a day trip for grownups!

If history is what you¡¯re after, Philadelphia is the place for you. In most cases, Philly is only an hour to two away from any point in New Jersey. Independence Mall, known as the birthplace of our nation, includes the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall.  Keep in mind that advanced reservations are required if you wish to have free admission. These reservations can be made at the Independence Visitor¡¯s Center at 6th and Market Streets. The Colonial home of Betsy Ross is also available to tours, as is the Johnson house, a Quaker home that was once a stop on the Underground Railroad. Also worth seeing is Elfreth¡¯s Alley, the oldest continuously occupied street in the US. Many of Philadelphia¡¯s historical attractions cost little or no money to visit. The experience, however, is priceless. The Philadelphia zoo is, at the most, only two hours away. Visit the first zoo in America and see elephants, giraffes, bears and many other animals. There¡¯s also a children¡¯s zoo with ducks, farm animals and activities for young children.

Three to four hours from southern New Jersey is picturesque Lancaster, Pennsylvania, also known as Pennsylvania Dutch Country. Here one can tour Amish country, see covered bridges, visit museums and other cultural points of interest, shop in some wonderful farmer¡¯s market and eat at a homestyle restaurant.

No more than three hours away from the farthest point in New Jersey is historical Valley Forge, the site of George Washington¡¯s 1777-1778 winter encampment. At the park, one can view monuments, buildings and Washington¡¯s headquarters.

Located about 150 miles from Trenton is another historic stop, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, the site of the famous Civil War battle. Take a guided tour or walk at your own pace; either way, this is a not-to-be missed experience. One can even tour by bicycle or horse. Gettysburg also hosts ten civil war museums and offers ghost tours at night. Just another reason to visit Pennsylvania.

Those who live in New Jersey can consider themselves among the fortunate. Not only do they happen to reside in a state rich in beauty and history, but they¡¯re also close enough to other beautiful and historic states to visit them frequently. All of the sites mentioned here are no more than four hours away from any point in New Jersey. Why not visit one of them on your next day off?
