When picturing romantic locations to visit, New Jersey isn¡¯t a place that immediately comes to mind. Instead, it¡¯s usually associated with rest stops and toll takers. People who live in this fine state know otherwise, however. There¡¯s more to New Jersey than the country¡¯s most celebrated turnpike; it¡¯s a place rich in history and beauty. For some fun quality time together, don¡¯t discount the Garden State. You may be pleasantly surprised.

Cape May: Thousands of people visit New Jersey¡¯s famous 127 miles of white sandy beaches for fun in the sun each year, but if a romantic time ¡°down the shore¡± is what you¡¯re looking for, Cape May is place to be. This quaint seaside community offers more than just a relaxing day on its sparkling beaches. In fact, there are plenty of other activities in which one can partake without getting one¡¯s feet wet. Those who delight in living in the past will want to tour Cape May¡¯s many historic buildings and museums, not to mention its famous lighthouses. Take a guided tour or walk at your own pace to enjoy the Victorian architecture. You¡¯ll think you¡¯re in paradise as you board a schooner for whale and dolphin watching or just sail the Delaware Bay. If you¡¯d rather check out nature on dry land, you might want to note that Cape May is one of the most famous bird watching destinations in the country. Afterwards, dine on fresh seafood in one of the Cape¡¯s many fine restaurants. If you¡¯re planning on staying for a while, spend the night in a 19th century bed and breakfast, but make your reservations early as space fills up fast. 

Atlantic City: For a little more glitz and a faster-paced lifestyle, why not visit Atlantic City? By day, one can relax on the beach, charter a fishing boat or visit some of Atlantic City¡¯s fun or interesting attractions like the Ripley¡¯s Believe It or Not Museum or the roller coasters at the Steel Pier Amusement Park. Learn about marine life at the Ocean Life Center with its aquarium and interactive exhibits, or visit the Abescon Lighthouse. By night, stroll the most famous boardwalk in the world and stop in at the different casinos and try your luck at games of chance, see a show or enjoy a delicious meal at a five-star restaurant.

Great Adventure: Are you a thrill seeker? The adventurous couple might enjoy Six Flags Great Adventure, in Jackson, NJ. It¡¯s home to no less than a dozen roller coasters plus over 100 other rides and attractions. While at the park, you can even take in a show or watch a rock concert. Before entering the amusement park, however, take a drive through the 350-acre wild animal safari ¨C just make sure to roll up your windows! Next door to Great Adventure is Hurricane Harbor, a water park with an enormous wave pool, adventure river and almost 20 water 

rides. 

The Appalachian Trail: For those who are interested in spending time in the great outdoors, New Jersey is the place to be. The Appalachian Trail, which stretches from Georgia to Maine, is the country¡¯s most famous hiking path. 72 of its 2,168 scenic miles are located in New Jersey. Hike for a day, weekend or longer on this picturesque trail. There are plenty of shelters provided should you decide to stop for the night. Some of the highlights include The Delaware Water Gap Recreational Area and Culver¡¯s Gap on the ridge of the Kittatinny Mountains. 

Delaware Water Gap National Recreational Area: This national park, which is as beautiful as it is historic, includes 40 miles of the Delaware River and approximately 70,000 acres of land in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Visitors can camp, hike, bike, swim and canoe in this state treasure. While touring the park, one can find waterfalls, historic homes and cemeteries dating back to the Revolutionary war. One can also tour Millbrook Village, a working replica of a late 19th century rural community or hike along the Appalachian Trail.

Amwell Valley Vineyard: New Jersey also hosts many fine wineries. For instance, the Amwell Valley Vineyard, located at 80 Old York Road in Ringoes, NJ, offers guided tours, wine tastings, and retail sales. What could make a more perfect date? 

Horseback Riding: For something a little more off the beaten path, why not try some horseback riding? Echo Lake Stables in Newfoundland, NJ, offers horseback riding, hayrides, cookouts and even carriages for weddings. For a more romantic time, take a nighttime adventure ride on moonlit trails and dine under the stars.

Planetarium at the New Jersey State Museum: New Jersey has something for everyone and stargazers are no exception. The 150-seat Planetarium at the New Jersey State Museum in Trenton provides laser and sky shows. Call for times and performances or view the Planetarium¡¯s web page.

Duke Farms: The 700 acre Doris Duke Estate in Hillsborough, NJ, offers up tours of its breathtaking Greenhouse Gardens, seasonal bird watching excursions, and scenic drives where one can view the park¡¯s buildings, scenery and learn its history. Tours of the park are offered Wednesday through Sunday, from April to November. Call ahead to check times and make reservations.

Tuckerton Seaport: Go back in time to the Tuckerton Village seaport and museum. Located along the Tuckerton Creek, this working seaport village offers a peek into the past where one can view historical buildings, workshops and demonstrations.

Minor League Baseball: The Great American Pastime is alive and well in New Jersey. Root for one of the Garden State¡¯s many minor league teams. Come out to support the Trenton Thunder, New Jersey Cardinals, Somerset Patriots, Camden Riversharks, Atlantic City Surf, Newark Bears or New Jersey Jackals. Details can be viewed at each team¡¯s website.

The Arts: If you¡¯re hoping to take in a little culture, look no further. New Jersey has many theaters and art galleries for a couple to enjoy. The New Jersey Center for Performing Arts (NJPAC) in Newark offers many entertaining programs, from the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra to the ballet, opera and even rock concerts, NJPAC offers something for everyone. The South Jersey Performing Arts Center (SJPAC) in Camden also offers many fine performances and programs. For dance and dance theater, one can visit the New Jersey Ballet in Livingston or the American Repertory Ballet in Princeton. Each hosts breathtaking performances by dancers from all over the world. 

If you prefer a more visual experience, you might visit one of New Jersey¡¯s many fine art galleries. The New Jersey Center for the Visual Arts in Summit showcases many works by local artists as well as classes and workshops. There¡¯s even an outdoor art gallery, with unusual and colorful sculptures on display. Updates and details on the different performances and programs for all are offered on their respective websites. 

When visiting New Jersey, you¡¯re limited only by your imagination. Swim its shorelines or camp in one of the many state or national parks. Take a hot air balloon ride or go canoeing or tubing down the Delaware. Enjoy a wine tasting tour or drop in at the many historic buildings or museums. Stop by soon and you¡¯ll see what residents of this fine state have known all along. The Garden State offers something for couples from all walks of life. Visit for one day and you¡¯re sure to agree that New Jersey is more than a roadway between New York and Pennsylvania. It¡¯s a place of history and beauty.
