At the thought of visiting Nairobi, Kenya¡¯s capital, and one of the fastest growing cities in Africa, one may think about unrest, crime, and danger. However, this city, which is only over one hundred years old is surprisingly modern with a traditional touch. There is a myriad of immigrants who live here and their diversity truly makes Nairobi a colorful city to visit.
One main attraction that Nairobi has to offer is the National Museum of Kenya. Perhaps the biggest draw to this museum is the ¡°birthplace of humanity¡± section where the bones of the oldest humans can be found. The museum also has many artifacts of the native Kenyans and displays the history of the country and of Africa itself. There is also the Sorsbie Art Gallery in Nairobi to peruse and the Railroad Museum shows the tourist how Nairobi became a city. The National Archives also has a big collection of photographs and Kenyan Art.
Another cultural attraction to visit is the Bomas of Kenya. This homestead is a model village that shows the tourist the diversity of the many tribes of Kenya. This attraction also offers native crafts, music, and dance.
There are three large markets to browse in Nairobi. They are the Municipal Market, the bazaar, and the blue market. These offer interesting shops and native, homemade items to buy. However, purse snatching is very common in Nairobi and a smart traveler is a safe one. Always look after your valuables.
Perhaps the greatest draw to Kenya¡¯s capital is the wildlife. Nairobi has an arboretum which houses many native flora. For the wildlife enthusiast, the Giraffe Center is a must-see. This attraction contains a self-guided hike through a forest filled with tame giraffes, allowing the tourist get up close and personal with this beautiful, graceful animal.
The most popular attraction in Nairobi is the National Park. This park is 117 kilometers and is only twenty minutes from the city. Here lie the savannahs where lions stalk their prey, and is one of the only places in the world where a person can see a black rhino in its native habitat. There are 400 species of animals here and an immense bird population. It is the place where many nature documentaries are filmed and where the wildlife can be seen up close at its wildest. The best time to go here is in March and April when the annual migration takes place and more wildlife can be spotted. Also connected to the national park are the Nairobi Safari Walk and the Nairobi Animal Orphanage. The Safari Walk is an educational walk, showing Kenya¡¯s native wildlife and flora. Through its displays the Kenyan people hope to teach people ways of conservation and respect for the animal population. The Animal Orphanage houses orphans and injured and abandoned animals in the hopes to rehabilitate them and release them back into the wild. Throughout the years it has also become a small zoo for the non-native animals that have showed up there as well.
Nairobi is a thrilling place to visit and is a must for anyone who loves to see wildlife in its own natural habitat. It is not a place one will soon forget. |
