The beautiful state of Montana conjures up images of majestic mountains and crystal clear rivers. Within those rivers, however, lies a treasure trove of fish that makes a fishing vacation to Montana an angler¡¯s dream come true. There are so many areas all over the state to fish, that the only problem you might have will be where to begin. 

Since many visitors like to begin their Montana vacation at Yellowstone National Park, then that might be an easy place to begin your fishing adventure. Yellowstone has several wonderful fishing areas to explore including Yellowstone Lake, which has an abundance of trout. If you are up for a hike, the Yellowstone River at Black Canyon offers excellent fishing and good sized rainbow trout. 

Blacktail Deer Creek, Tower Creek, and Slough Creek are all beautiful waters to fish. Gibbon River, near the Norris Campground area, is also a fairly easy river to fish and yields trout along with small brook fish. The Madison River joins Gibbon River and is a great place to fish in the cooler weather of spring and fall. 

Shosone Lake is the second largest lake in Yellowstone, but it is accessed only by a trail. Early summer, before the fish find cooler areas, is a great time to fish this beautiful and remote area of water. If you are looking for a place to take your motorized boat, then try Lewis Lake. You can usually find brown trout here. 

Big Hole River in southwestern Montana offers many areas to fish for rainbow trout, brown trout, and other types of fish. There are many sections to this river, so grab a map and work your way down if you have the time. 

Beaverhead River is located in the Bitterroot Valley in southwestern Montana. According to many experienced anglers, trout are usually found in abundance in this river. Some seasons even boast record breaking numbers. You can also drive along Gallatin River and stop to fish at any spot that looks inviting. There is one area outside of the park boundaries that you can float. You will need to get a map at one of the supply stores to find the exact spot. 

As you move on north and to the west in Montana, the Bitterroot Valley continues. Here lies several Bitterroot Valley creeks including South Fork Lolo Creek, Bass Creek, Kootenai Creek, Burnt Fork Creek, Big Creek, and Bear Creek. These are just a few of the many creeks in the area, and they all offer beautiful places to try your hand at fishing. 

Another wonderful place to fish in western Montana is the Seeley-Swan area, which offers something for just about every member of the family. The Seeley Lake recreation area and Swan River basin offer swimming, hiking, canoeing, jet skiing, and wilderness excursions, along with many other activities. If you came to fish, but your family came to play, then this is the best of both worlds. The Seeley Lake chain of water has trout, pike, salmon, and perch.

If trophy-sized trout is what you are angling for, then you must go to the Missouri River in the center of Montana. The Missouri system of reservoirs offers plenty of spring migratory spawning and, thus, great fishing for you! There are plenty of campgrounds in the area, also.

As you move on up into the northwestern section of Montana, you will definitely want to check out the Flathead River. This river is fortified by glacial drainages and is as beautiful as it is wild. Be prepared for more rigorous fishing, however, as this river has steep canyons surrounding much of it, and access is limited. 

Upper Dearborn River in the Rocky Mountain area of Montana is a great place to fish in August and September if you love a challenge. The area is not that easy to navigate, and strategic fishing is the name of the game here, but when you find success you will be doubly thrilled by your catch.  

As you can see, Montana has an abundance of lakes, rivers, and creeks just waiting for you. Trout are waiting in the cold, clear waters surrounded by majestic mountains and lush forests. Now it is up to you to decide where to begin.
