Currently one of the most popular tourist spots thanks to the book The Di Vinci Code is the Santa Maria della Grazie. The Santa Maria della Grazie is home to the Last Supper. There is a long waiting list to view this since only 15 people can view this masterpiece at a time. Call ahead as the waiting list can be very lengthy, a month or more of waiting time is not unheard of. Other places where you can see works of Leonardo di Vinci is at the Castello Sforzesco, as some of this works are contained there.
The Castello Sforzesco has been in Milan since the middle ages, and was formerly a castle. The Castello Sforzesco now houses many different art museums which contain a variety of art, textiles, armor, weapons, and objects of everyday life from the middle ages onward. If you wish to see everything here, expect to spend at least a half a day here, as there are so many different museums held here. Michelangelo¡¯s last unfinished work is held here as well, the Rondanini Pieta, is stunning, as one can see a great deal of his technique in this unfinished work.
If shopping is your idea of excitement the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele is the place you want to go. Built in the 1800¡¯s this is a stunning gallery of shops that you will not want to miss. Also, keep in mind; this is one of the few areas of shopping that will be open on a Sunday. Shops such as Gucci, Prada, and a variety of other high end Italian designers also have shops here. Don¡¯t miss the opportunity to stop for a coffee and do some people watching.
The Piazza del Duomo is home to many of Milan¡¯s treasures. Nearby the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele is one of Milan¡¯s most stunning attractions. The Duomo, is a gothic church that took almost five hundred years to build. This pristine white marble church is not to be missed. The Duomo¡¯s exterior is home to over 3400 individual statues, and 135 spires. Atop The Duomo stands the gilded Madonna, which is the highest structure in Milan. While you are here you can take the stairs or the elevator up to the top of the Duomo and have the best view of Milan.
Also located in the Piazza del Duomo is the la Scalia. If you are an opera or ballet lover you can not miss a trip to the la Scalia. This has recently completed renovations and reopened in 2004. Nearby the la Scalia is the la Scalia museum. Home to costumes, and paintings of many of the famous artists that have played at the la Scalia over the years, you may not want to miss this attraction.
Keep in mind that many of Milan¡¯s attractions are easily accessible through the subway system. While the subway does not run 24 hours a day it does run from around 6 am until midnight in most popular destinations. Also, while in Milan make sure that you try some of the regions Milanese Risotto. The Milanese Risotto is a fabulous pasta dish that is rich and creamy that you may not find in other areas.
Milan is definitely one of the northern Italy¡¯s treasures. A history that is rich in art and culture. Many of Italy¡¯s most famous artists were supported by the town¡¯s patrons over the years, and you will find their works very accessible. The city is easy to get around using the subway, as most areas are connected via the subway and bus connections. Shopping opportunities abound in this fashion center of Italy. No matter what your interests are, Milan has something to offer you.
