Living abroad is exciting for many reasons. You often can learn another language, meet people with varied histories, and get used to a new culture and norms that at first may seem strange. However, don't forget to take into account the down side as well. Anytime a person visits a strange environment, it pays to obtain useful knowledge beforehand and go prepared. 

1. Get your documents in order. In addition to a passport, personal identification, and a visa for the countries you plan to visit, it would also be a good idea to take copies of your marriage or divorce certificates, children's birth certificates and/or adoption papers, immunization records, and anything else that helps to confirm your identity and your preparedness to travel through the Middle East. Customs there are often conservative, though the Western way of life is generally understood. You don't want to take any chances of being misunderstood, however, so take along any forms or paperwork that would help to explain why you're there and what, if anything, you hope to accomplish during your visit. 

2. Take hygienic precautions. Unless you know Middle Eastern people or have read about the culture, there are some things to keep in mind before you go. For example, toilets follow Eastern design and often are porcelain bowls that are set into the ground rather than on pedestals. This means a person must squat over rather than sit directly on a toilet. Cleansing apparatus may be different, too, depending on where you travel and stay. Most hotels are Westernized, but some follow the custom of using the left hand with water and soap for cleansing after bathroom use. Another option is to use a pitcher with a long snout for pouring water over affected areas. You can always take along some tissue, too, of course. Produce or meat bought in the marketplace should be rinsed thoroughly at home and cleaned before cooking. Water in some areas may need to be boiled first. Otherwise, drink canned or bottled soda. 

3. Expect warm hospitality. You will likely be invited as a guest to many people's houses, and treated with the utmost respect. Be thoughtful and kind as you would anywhere, without being too personal unless it is initiated by your host. The food may be different from what you are used to, so if you have food allergies, let your host know before eating. It is always a nice gesture to take along flowers or boxed candy as a gift to the hostess when dining with families. 

4. Shopping is a bargain. Literally. Many if not most Middle Eastern vendors love to haggle over prices and they will be disappointed if you give in too readily. Examine the product carefully to determine its worth and set a price in your mind a few dollars below the asking price. There may be exceptions with certain products, however, so assess the situation before making an offer. When buying relics, keep in mind that there are many duplications on the market.

5. Time may move more slowly. The Middle East is a timeless area where history and modernity meet. Americans expect to arrive at an appointment on time and be met in a punctual manner. This may not happen abroad, however. Be prepared to wait or even return several times before accomplishing your objective. You may want to call ahead for an appointment and call again to confirm it if time really is of the essence. 

6. Pests may be bothersome. The U.S. is phobic in many ways about eliminating rodents and insects from daily life. But in the Middle East, with its climate and heat, this can be hard to due. Palmetto bugs are common, as are certain types of house lizards, some of which may be poisonous. Rodents are aggressive and sometimes commonplace, depending on where you will be staying. Ask ahead of time about these issues to find out what you can do to avoid them. 

When you travel to the Middle East, you will be mesmerized by the exotic sounds like the call to prayer in Moslem regions, or smells, like the spices sold at the bazaar. There is much to see and do. Plan ahead to make the most of your trip and to avoid the pitfalls that can take away from your pleasure.
