Memphis, Tennessee, is known by many nicknames:  The Bluff City, Home of the Blues, Birthplace of Rock-n-Roll, and The Tri-City.  This sleepy little southern cotton town nestled along the Mississippi River has grown into a metropolitan, modern city, being the home to almost one million people.   

It¡¯s very rare that a city gives birth to two different types of music (rock-n-roll and blues), but Memphis did just that.  In 1909, W.C. Handy wrote the first blues song in Memphis and gave it a large part of its heritage.  With that song, Beale Street in Memphis became the hub of blues musicians.  However, Beale Street suffered from years of decay due in part to riots that rampaged through the area after the death of Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968, when much of the famed street was destroyed.   Beale Street was refurbished in the Eighties and now stretching three downtown blocks, it honors W. C. Handy¡¯s memory by featuring the best blues music in the world.  There are nightclubs, art galleries, museums, restaurants and shops lining the street.  Among the nightclubs, you will find B.B. King¡¯s Blues Club.  Owned by the legendary bluesman B.B. King, this club has the finest blues musicians and sometimes B.B. even shows up to play.   As for shops, you must visit A. Schwab¡¯s Dry Goods, the oldest continuous business on Beale.  It¡¯s often said ¡°If you can¡¯t find it at Schwab¡¯s, you don¡¯t need it!¡±

Many people across the world equate Memphis with its favorite son, Elvis Presley.  Graceland, the home of Elvis, has daily tours that include the house, museum and surrounding grounds.  You can visit Meditation Garden, where Elvis, his parents, and grandparents are buried, for free each morning before 8:00 am.  Across the street from Graceland, there is an entire shopping mall dedicated to Elvis memorabilia.    If you want to check out some of Elvis¡¯ favorite haunts, stop by Sun Studios in Midtown.  In 1954, a young Elvis stepped into this studio to record a song for his mother and a legend was born.  Or visit the only theme park in Memphis:  Libertyland.  Opened in 1976 to celebrate the Bicentennial, Libertyland has over twenty different rides, games and attractions.  It is the home of the Zippin-Pippin, the second oldest operating wooden roller coaster in the world.  Elvis loved Libertyland so much that he used to rent it at night for friends and family to enjoy.  

Memphis also has a remarkable soul music legacy.  The Stax Museum, located on the site of the original recording studio, offers a look at the beginning of soul through exhibits, photos, artifacts and music of such greats as Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding and Al Green.   Be sure to visit the Soul Train dance floor with images and music from the famous Seventies dance show.  If you want to see how soul and rock-n-roll were born, check out the Rock-n-Soul Museum on Beale Street.  It offers a glimpse into how music from the cotton fields, back alley juke joints and churches came together to create rock and soul music.

One of the focal points of the city is the Mississippi River.  Visitors can take a moonlight dinner and music cruise on the river aboard the Memphis Queen, a restored riverboat.  Taking its name from its sister city in Egypt, it is only fitting that right off the river in Memphis is the third largest pyramid in the world.  The 32-story, stainless steel Pyramid Area is the site of many sporting events and concerts, seating over 20,000.  Every May, the city hosts a month long celebration of another county and its culture.  Among the events during Memphis in May are the world¡¯s the largest barbecue contest, the three-day Beale Street musical festival and a month-ending sunset symphony by the Memphis Symphony Orchestra.

In the mood for some baseball?  In 2000, the Memphis Redbirds, the Saint Louis Cardinals AAA baseball farm team, moved into their new ballpark, Autozone Park, located in downtown Memphis.  A throwback to ballparks from long ago, this handsome stadium gives you an old-timey baseball feel while offering the amenities of modern ballparks.   Future additions include the Minor League Hall of Fame and Museum next door to the park.

The Memphis Zoo, the largest in Tennessee, features two new additions, Ya Ya and Le Le, endangered giant Pandas from China.  Among the exhibits that boast over 3,000 animals are the Cat County, Primate Canyon and Tropical Bird House.  It has animal shows, rides, a zoo shop and a discovery center for kids.  The Animals at Night exhibit, which allows kids to see nocturnal animals at play, is the only one of its kind in the Mid-South.  

There are also plenty of free and inexpensive thing to do in Memphis.  Take a tour through Elmwood Cemetery, the oldest in Memphis.  The cemetery has monuments of eighteen Civil War generals and other soldiers lost in the war.  It also had beautiful gardens and over sixty different species of trees on its eighty acres.  The National Civil Rights Museum honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., has a free time for visitors on Mondays after 3:00 pm.  Exhibits include famed civil rights activists Nat Turner, Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass.  To take a peek at Memphis history, visit the Peabody Hotel.  Located in downtown Memphis for over 130 years, the Peabody is majestic hotel of the south.  Step inside to view the ornate architecture and see the famous Peabody Ducks play in the lobby fountain each day at 11:00 am and 5:00 pm.   While it might not seem like a typical place to visit, a tour of the St. Jude¡¯s Children¡¯s Hospital will be both fascinating and humbling.  St Jude¡¯s is one of the premiere research hospitals for children¡¯s diseases, focusing primarily on cancer.  One of its doctors received the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1996.  Take a walk through the Cooper-Young district and you will visit one of the hippest, most culturally diverse neighborhoods in Memphis.  In the center of Midtown, the Cooper-Young Historic District had vintage clothing stores, coffeehouses, great restaurants and beautiful houses that date back to the early 1900s.
