It's called "Vacationland." One of the license plates drivers sport has an orange lobster outline that more closely resembles a large bug than the tasty sea delicacy. And the key phrase repeated by travel agents and tour operators is "rocky coast." So how does one equate romantic destination with a state described this way? Spend a weekend in Maine. You'll see.
Start at the southern most tip of the state. Kittery, Maine is an historical town bordering the state of New Hampshire. Enjoy a quiet romantic dinner for two at Chauncey's Lobster Pound overlooking the Piscataqua River. Indulge in a hot boiled lobster with fresh drawn butter, and an ear of locally grown corn on the cob. Drive a few minutes north of Kittery to York and plan to spend at least a day and an evening. The York Harbour Inn features exquisite dining and romantic, quaint accommodations. Guests can hear the crashing waves of the Atlantic Ocean. In addition, this comfortable inn and restaurant is only a few steps to local shops, galleries and art museums. Enjoy the inn's delicious home baked pastries and muffins for breakfast the next morning, then continue north on your exploration of Vacationland.
If time permits, casually explore the beaches north of York. You'll discover Kennebunkport. In fact, you may even catch a glimpse of former President George Bush and his wife Barbara. Explore the sands of Ogunquit Beach. The expanse of sand, surf and rocky coastline is beautiful. An evening in Ogunquit would be incomplete without tickets to the Ogunquit Playhouse. This old fashioned theater has been around for decades. During the summer month the playhouse features nationally known talent in its productions of plays and musicals.
By now you've meandered up the coastline to the Freeport/Portland area. A visit to L.L. Bean is an event as well as a shopping experience. Stay for lunch in this quaint Maine town before driving on to Portland for your second night of romantic bliss.
Portland is often referred to as the Old Port. And that's exactly what it is. An old fishing port that was settled hundreds of years ago, Portland now boasts culturally rich experiences folks from all over Maine travel to enjoy. From theaters to concerts, art museums to antique malls--there's much to do and see in this fabulous city. While there, enjoy a romantic dinner for two at DeMillo's. This floating restaurant features seafood specialties and an incredible array of desserts. The desserts are large, and perfect for sharing.
Spend the night at one of many local inns or bed and breakfasts. For those who prefer hotel lodging, the Sheraton in South Portland features two round towers with elegant guest rooms and a variety of fine dining options. Located across from the Maine Mall, it is the perfect place to spend a romantic evening and a day of shopping.
Adventures abound in the Portland region. Hop on board one of several ferries and enjoy a vacation or a 24-hour sojourn to Canada. Some ferries allow cars for an additional fee. Others provide day rooms equipped with private bathrooms and lounging areas. Others provide actual cabins, and include amenities like cocktails and fine dining.
Bangor is the last large city one encounters before heading into the vast North country. In the summer it is home to the Bangor State Fair. Couples have long loved the view from the top of the Ferris wheel overlooking this large, colorful city. Wager a few dollars at the horse races and indulge in a special dinner along the Penobscot River. Visit the Sea Dog on Main Street, overlooking the river. Enjoy the daily specials and ice cold beverages.
Maine's ski resorts are perfect for couples year round. In the winter, cozy up in a warm room with a fireplace and sip hot cocoa before venturing out onto the slopes. During the off seasons, take advantage of low rates and even better rooms. Pack a picnic and go hiking on the many colorful mountain trails.
Northern Maine is a plethora of small country towns. Country inns and "Mom and Pop" restaurants offer privacy for quiet getaways, and firsthand glimpses into real rural living. Agriculture abounds in northern Maine so be sure to sample whatever is in season when stopping for a meal.
From the southern rocky coast to the potato fields in Aroostook County, there is an abundance of romantic places to enjoy special couple time in the state of Maine. Maine affords these getaways in a variety of price ranges and regions. There's something for everyone in Maine.
Do a bit of Internet research on all four seasons in Maine, and start planning your next romantic getaway. |
