The city of Little Rock is the heart of Arkansas, filled with historic destinations and new places to explore. 

Of course the city of Little Rock is known for two things: being the state capital from which Bill Clinton campaigned for and won the White House, and the 1957 school desegregation crisis at Central High School. Both of these moments are remembered through museums and historic sites that scores of visitors see every year. 

The William Jefferson Clinton Presidential Center and Park (located on President Clinton Avenue in downtown Little Rock) is home to the Clinton Presidential Library and Museum, which includes 20,000 square feet of exhibit space filled with more than 75,000 artifacts. There are replicas of the Oval Office and cabinet rooms here, as well as numerous interactive kiosks that allow you to delve deeper into the history and times of the 42nd president. The park is also home to the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service and the Little Rock office of the Clinton Foundation. The park is located on the Arkansas River so it is a beautiful place to stroll and take in the architecture. 

The Little Rock Central High Visitor¡¯s Center (located at the corner of Park Street and Daisy L. Gaston Bates Drive¡ªif you don¡¯t know who she is you will after your visit) was opened in 1998 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the desegregation (forced by the Army against the wishes of the governor) of Central High. It is maintained by the National Park Service, which offers tours of the visitor¡¯s center, commemorative garden and what is known as the Central High historic district (including the school, Quigley Stadium and Ponder¡¯s Drug Store). Special permission must be granted for tours inside the school, as it is still a working high school and has students throughout the year. 

But there is much more to Little Rock than these two sites. Little Rock is home to the oldest surviving Capitol building west of the Mississippi River. The Old State House, as it is now known, opened in 1836 and served as the Capitol until 1911. It now houses a museum dealing with Arkansas history and is a lovely example of Greek-Revival architecture.

The current Capitol is a beautiful Neo-Classical building surrounded by grounds that house the state¡¯s law enforcement officers memorial, a replica Liberty Bell, Pearl Harbor memorial, Vietnam memorial, the Arkansas Medal of Honor memorial, a War of 1812 memorial and monument to confederate soldiers and women. The building itself features a beautiful marble rotunda and is home to the old Supreme Court chamber, the period-restored reception room and the current House and Senate chambers. The doors of the Capitol are bronze and were purchased from Tiffany and Co. for $10,000. 

The governor¡¯s mansion is also open for tours daily. The Georgian Colonial building features marble floors, a grand staircase and recent additions including the grand hall and ballroom. This is the first and only official residence for the leader of Arkansas, and was first lived in beginning in 1950. There are two colonnade walkways that lead to cottages and through which you can view the mansion¡¯s gardens. It has one of the largest herb gardens maintained by the National Herb Society, as well as a garden maintained by Master Gardeners. 

For the history buff, Mount Holly Cemetery in Little Rock should be on the can¡¯t miss list. The cemetery was built in 1843 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is the final resting place of Pulitzer-winning poet John Gould Fletcher as well as five confederate generals, ten former governors and six U.S. senators. It is also where David O. Dodd, a youth executed as a confederate spy, is buried. 

Museums in Little Rock include the MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History (housed in the historic Arsenal Building, built in 1840, and named for Arkansan Gen. Douglas MacArthur), the Historic Arkansas Museum (featuring artifacts of Arkansas art and culture), and the Museum of Discovery (a hands-on science and technology museum for kids of all ages). A museum dedicated to preserving the history of black Arkansans is open by appointment only. 

The city also features the Arkansas Arts Center, which includes works on paper by famous artists and contemporary craft objects, as well as several galleries where you can buy works of art. 

Though not open for tours, your explorations of Little Rock should include a stroll through Quapaw Quarter, a neighborhood of beautiful historic homes near the Governor¡¯s mansion. Villa Marre, on South Scott Street, which was built in 1881 for saloonkeeper Angelo Marre,, was featured in the television show ¡°Designing Women.¡± It is a private residence. 

If you¡¯re willing to venture north of the river to North Little Rock, you can see the Old Mill, made famous as a backdrop for the opening credits in ¡°Gone With the Wind.¡± The mill, built in 1933, is a replica of an 1830s water-powered mill and is believed to be the only structure in the movie that is still standing. While in North Little Rock you can check out the maritime museum, which offers tours of the U.S.S. Razorback, a World War II era submarine.

Little Rock is a city steeped in history but offering future visitors much to see and do.
