If you find yourself alone in Little Rock, don't despair.  There are lots of things to do in the largest city in Arkansas, located on the beautiful Arkansas River.  Whether you like to be outdoors, dine at interesting restaurants, shop, or explore museums, Little Rock has lots for you to do.  Here are some fun things to do alone in Little Rock.

THE WILLIAM J. CLINTON PRESIDENTIAL CENTER AND PARK is one of the newest attractions in Little Rock.  You can't miss the library; it's right on the river downtown, and is quite striking (many say it resembles a giant silver trailer.)  Surrounded by a 30-acre park, the library and museum house many interesting exhibits in the four-storied building.  It takes at least a couple of hours to see all the exhibits, and you could spend all day reading the letters and documents on display.  There's a copy of Clinton's Oval Office, and the Cabinet Room has touch screens that give the history of the Balkans war and other events.  One of the most interesting displays shows gifts that the Clintons received while in the White House; there are items that are beautiful and costly, unusual, and just plain weird.  Caf¨¦ 42 is located in the basement of the library if you want a bite to eat while visiting.

RIVER MARKET is located downtown and is also on Pres. Clinton Avenue on the other side of IH-30.  Situated on the river, the market features a farmers market, and many outdoor activities are scheduled there, especially in the summer.  Inside the market are many food stalls, and you can buy all kinds of delicacies from smoked meats to flavored coffees.  There are many restaurants and shops in the River Market District, and the Clinton Museum Store there offers souvenirs and Clinton memorabilia.  If you're hungry, check out the Flying Fish for seafood, easy to spot with its line of outboard motors displayed on the outside wall or Bosco's for brews and interesting food.  

The PEABODY HOTEL is also located downtown along the river, and it has the same duck show as the Peabody in Memphis.  Each morning the ducks are paraded down into the lobby, where they remain in the fountain all day, and then they parade back up in the afternoon.  If you haven't seen the show, it's fun to watch, and the hotel lobby is a lovely place to linger.  

CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL is now a National Historic Site, and it grabbed the attention of the nation in 1957 when nine black students tried to go to school there.  Located near downtown on Daisy L. Gaston Bates Drive, there's a museum next door to the school that is housed in a former gas station.  Exhibits there tell the story of the courageous Little Rock Nine, and tours of the center are available.  The school building is still in operation as a school, so except in the summer, tours there are limited.

"Designing Women" was a TV show that was popular in the 1980s; although the show's setting was Atlanta, the house used for the filmings was in Little Rock.  The DESIGNING WOMEN HOUSE, also known as Villa Marre, is in the Quapaw neighborhood on Scott Street.  Recently sold, the house looks a little rundown now, but if you were a fan of the Sugarbakers it's worth a drive-by to see the distinctive Italian-style exterior.

The OLD STATE HOUSE MUSEUM is beside the Peabody Hotel, and it was formerly used as the capitol building for Arkansas.  Built in the early 1800s in Greek Revival style, it was restored in the 1990s and was used by Pres. Clinton for victory parties and campaign speeches.  The museum houses many displays on Arkansas historical topics, and also has changing exhibits of note.  

The ARKANSAS STATE CAPITOL is on Capitol Avenue, and it's a lovely building; it looks like the U.S. Capitol.  It dates back to the early 1900s and was built of limestone, with brass doors from Tiffany's and lots of marble on the interior.  On the capitol grounds are many monuments to fallen soldiers and lovely landscaping; guided tours of the building are given, or visitors can wander around and look at whatever catches their eyes.  

On a pleasant day, a stroll around the LITTLE ROCK ZOO is nice.  The shady grounds house several hundred animals, from lemurs to wart hogs, and entrance tickets are only a few dollars.  There are also many parks in Little Rock suitable for an afternoon stroll; the largest are Allsopp Park, which has trails and recreational fields for those who want to engage in sports, MacArthur Park, which has gardens, an art center, and a military history museum, and Murray Park and Riverfront Park, both fronting on the Arkansas River.  

If you just want to take in a movie or play, Little Rock has several movie theaters, including an IMAX theater, and frequent performances in the arts.  The Rep is on Main Street and presents Broadway-style productions and ballet, and the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra plays at Robinson Center Music Hall.  Murry's Dinner Playhouse on Asher Avenue offers dinner theater, and the Alltel Arena hosts major music concerts. 

SHOPPING is available in the River Market area and in many other areas of Little Rock.  Hillcrest, Bowman Curve, Cantrell, and The Heights areas all have lots of small shops and boutiques that sell clothes, gifts, jewelry, art, etc., and there are also unique cafes and restaurants there.  Morris Antiques in Keo has a huge store full of fabulous finds, and there are many other antique stores in all areas of Little Rock.  There are also malls in Little Rock full of stores; North Little Rock has the Shoppes at North Hills and McCain Mall, and University Mall and Park Plaza Mall are in the western part of Little Rock.  A new shopping center at Pleasant Ridge on Cantrell is due to open soon with many stores new to Little Rock, such as Parisian.

There are many things to do alone in Little Rock, so have fun and soak up the little town atmosphere of this big city.
