Rolling hills, farming communities, antiques, history, horse breeding, distilleries - the list could go on and on.  This is what awaits you in and around the Lexington Kentucky area.  The surrounding countryside and the city general are packed with natural beauty and man-made treasures.  You could spend a month in Lexington and just scratch the surface of what you can experience.

THINGS TO SEE AND DO BY CATEGORY

1. Horses, Horses, Horses 每 Did we mention this was horse country?  Lexington is considered ※the horse capital of the world.§  This is the area where thoroughbreds are bred, foaled, trained, bought, sold, raced, and retired.  It boasts the only horse park in the world, the Kentucky Horse Park, complete with a museum, a gift shop, a theatre, exhibits, and incredibly beautiful grounds along with a race course, a harness track and the Thoroughbred Center where you can watch thoroughbred training up close.  There are also working farm tours and a daily parade of breeds, along with riding and horse drawn carriage tours.

Tours of local, private horse farms allow you to get a further look behind the scenes of horse training.  Some regional and private stables offer the opportunity to ride the area.  

Visit Keeneland racecourse for the latest information on the sport of racing.  Keeneland is also the place to sell and plays an important role in conducting Thoroughbred sales worldwide.

2. History & Architecture 每 Lexington holds a great deal of history just waiting for you to discover it.  From Civil War sites, Kentucky was a state that held supporters of both sides, to antiquing (quilts, Shaker, and furniture are just some of the local treasures), to a tour of Lexington＊s historic homes you can come into contact with one of America＊s most famous statesmen, a Civil War general and a First Lady, Mary Todd Lincoln.  Many of the antebellum homes and buildings are still intact and waiting for you to visit.

Stay in one of Lexington＊s quaint bed and breakfasts to get the close up picture of old Lexington.  Locate one that is within walking distance of tourist traveled sites and nightlife and you have a ready-made weekend of entertainment and fun.

3. Bluegrass and Nature 每 There is plenty of it to see and admire in the Lexington area.  A trip during the fall will reveal foliage for miles and beauty that is truly stunning.  Day trips out into the surrounding areas divulge pioneer cabins, the country＊s largest Shaker community, and an Appalachian museum.

Garden tours are a popular in town tourist attraction.  The Lexington Cemetery is nationally known for its arboretum and gardens.  The Lexington-Fayette Urban County Arboretum provides a ※plant walk§ that describes the foliage of the state of Kentucky.  Both venues are an informative and relaxing way to spend part of your day.

Enjoy the weather and the scenery while golfing on championship-caliber courses.  Golf is king, right behind horses, bourbon, and college sports, and many of the courses are set within horse farm country for a breathtaking game.

4. Bourbon 每 Kentucky has a tradition of Bourbon making that spans generations.  There are tours designed around this subject that allow for viewing and sampling.  Right outside of Lexington is The Woodford Reserve Distillery.  This distillery is the only site still using the original Scottish ※pot still§ method.

5. Folk Arts, Galleries & Museums 每 It stands to reason that an historical place such as Lexington would be home to some of the finest craftspeople in the country, and it is.  Arts and crafts are the specialty of the area.  Visit a top hand weaving studio, pottery making shops and a world of Appalachian and Shaker crafts.  The oldest pottery company west of the Alleghenies is available for visits as well.  

Not only will you find arts and crafts but you will also find contemporary arts galleries and museums filled with local talent.  Check the local paper for listings and show openings.

The Headley-Whitney Museum is the only museum dedicated to the decorative arts in the state.  You can find jewelry, silver, textiles, porcelain, and furniture along with a one-of-a-kind ※Shell Grotto§ room.  The room is filled with shells and stones attached to the walls, doors, and window moldings.  It is a must see.
