Las Vegas is a fun and exciting vacation destination for many people, but what happens when you want to escape the lights and the casinos for something a little different and off the beaten path? Not to worry, there are plenty of activities for day-trippers to enjoy.
The Valley of Fire State Park is located about an hour outside of Las Vegas. It¡¯s Nevada¡¯s oldest and largest state park, and with its sandstone formations, it¡¯s also one of the most beautiful. The park is an ideal location for hiking, camping and picnicking. Visitors to the park can view 300-year old petroglyphs painted on the rocks by Indians, the Seven Sisters, sandstone towers marking the park¡¯s picnic area, petrified logs and stumps, more than two million years old, and beehives, sandstone formations resembling the real thing. The park and the Visitor¡¯s Center are open year round. Bring plenty of water though; the Visitor¡¯s Center is the only place in the park with a water fountain.
Only 30 miles outside of Sin City, Hoover Dam is a popular day trip destination. Included in the cost of admission is a 30-minute guided tour, historic film about the building of the damn, entrance into the exhibit hall and views from the scenic overlook. Even if you¡¯re not interested in taking the full tour, it¡¯s worth it to stop by and see the dam and Lake Mead. The Lake Mead Recreation Area is also about 30 minutes from Las Vegas and has about 500 miles of shore line for folks to hike, swim and water ski.
About 140 miles outside of Las Vegas is State Route 375, also known as the Extraterrestrial Highway. This lonely stretch of road is a popular tourist attraction. Because of its close proximity to Area 51, an allegedly infamous top-secret government site, Route 375 is supposedly a hub of Alien activity. The Extraterrestrial Highway is easily spotted by its signs proclaiming a speed limit of ¡°Warp 7¡± and ¡°Alien activity for the next 51 miles.¡±
Only an hour¡¯s drive away from the glitz of Las Vegas is the Pahrump Winery, in Pahrump, Nevada. The Winery offers guided tours, a tasting bar, a gift shop, and even a rose garden with a gazebo that makes it a popular and romantic destination for weddings. There¡¯s a gourmet restaurant and even live jazz on an outdoor stage. Dance under the stars or take part in a grape stomp; there¡¯s something for everyone to enjoy.
Just a quick 20-minute drive from The Strip is Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. In the park, one can observe petrified sand dunes, and waterfalls. Hikers along the different trails can spot wildlife, such as red-tailed hawks and wild burros. (Although they seem tame, wild burros can be dangerous. So please, don¡¯t feed or approach these animals.) The park also boasts a 13-mile scenic drive and more than 30 miles of hiking trails and picnic areas. Bike riding is also permitted on designated trails. Rock climbing is allowed, but permits are necessary for overnight use and late exits. Make sure you bring plenty of water since you¡¯ll be spending the day in the desert.
Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge is located about 90 miles outside of Las Vegas in Nevada¡¯s Amargosa Valley. The refuge houses 24 varieties of plants and animals not found anywhere else in the world. Visitors to the refuge office can view brochures and other information and walk the Crystal Springs Interpretive Boardwalk Trail. While at the refuge, one can observe wildlife, hunt, picnic, and even swim in the designated area. Birdwatchers take note: Bird lists are available at the headquarters or online. Visitors to the Refuge are urged to bring plenty of water, food and sunscreen.
Old Nevada is more than just a thirty-minute ride from Las Vegas; it¡¯s a trip back in time. Here at the 115-acre Bonnie Springs ranch, one can visit the Old West as it used to be. Saloons, tumbleweeds, stagecoaches and a boot hill cemetery are only a few of the attractions at this replica of an 1880¡¯s mining town. Gunfights and hangings are also daily events. There¡¯s even a wax museum featuring exhibits from the frontier, a restaurant and plenty of shopping. Old Nevada is open daily, even on holidays.
Visitors to Las Vegas don¡¯t have to enjoy only the hustle and bustle of the Strip. There¡¯s plenty outside this wonderful city to take in as well. None of these places are much more than a tank of gas away; just about all of them are rich in history and beauty. Southern Nevada has something for everyone, from the lights of the casino to the stark splendor of the desert. Why not visit soon? |
