Illinois boasts big rivers, thick woodlands, flat farmland, small towns, miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, and the big metropolis of Lake Michigan. The Land of Lincoln offers natural sights to see, culture and history to absorb, and many different outdoor and indoor activities and accommodations to suit any heart¡¯s desire.

Central Illinois proudly presents its Abraham Lincoln roots throughout scattered historic sites re-tracing President Lincoln¡¯s steps through his life in the area. In the state capital, Springfield, visit the Lincoln Home National Historic Site seeing the only home he ever owned. On the south side of Lake Springfield is the Lincoln Memorial Garden and Nature Center with five miles of trails through the lovely grounds. Twenty miles northwest of Springfield is the charming town of Petersburg. Tour a re-created village that resembles the town when Lincoln originally lived there.

National Road runs through central Illinois¡¯ beautiful countryside and quaint towns. Take the historic highway to reach lakes, state parks with camping, and recreation areas along the shores of Middle Fork National Scenic River. Romantic activities available include renting a canoe or kayak and paddling down the river amongst trees, prairies, and wildlife.

If observing wildlife sparks your fire, visit the 2,000 acre Wildlife Prairie Park located ten miles west of Peoria. Eagle watching is a popular Illinois pastime and bald eagles are drawn to the Western region by the big rivers. ¡®River Country¡¯ is bordered by the Illinois River to its East, where Peoria sits, and the Mississippi River to its West separating Illinois and Iowa. The banks of both rivers are home to championship golf courses, riverboat casinos, hiking and biking trails, and scenic drives.

The Ohio River creates Illinois¡¯ southern border. Southern Illinois is beautiful and quiet with its extensive 277,000 acre Shawnee National Forest full of trails and developed or primitive spots for sleeping under the stars. For driving couples, two national scenic highways run along the bluffs above the river, Ohio Scenic Byway and Great River Road. Campgrounds and picnic spots are scattered along the way. For hiking couples, visit Garden of the Gods and hike trails on scenic limestone bluffs. Wineries have recently begun sprouting in the rich soil of southern Illinois. Romantically stroll throughout the vineyards and gift shops tasting the local food and wine.

In stark contrast to the peaceful countryside of Western, Southern, and Central Illinois is one of the biggest cities in the United States, Chicago. Buzzing with culture, the arts, nightlife, fine cuisine, lodging, and shopping, Chicago is one of few U.S. cities with such a level of sophistication. Miles of Lake Michigan shoreline to its east add to Chicago¡¯s romantic atmosphere. 

The Art Institute of Chicago, on Michigan Avenue, boasts a world-class collection of Monet¡¯s and masterpieces by renowned European and American artists. Also on Michigan Avenue, North of the Chicago River, is a shopper¡¯s nirvana, the magnificent mile. Trendy shops, rivaling Beverly Hills and New York City, upscale restaurants, and luxury hotels line North Michigan Avenue up to Lincoln Park.

A romantic place to stop while exploring Chicago is the famous hundred year old department store, Marshall Fields, on State Street. Couples have traditionally met under its recognizable clock. Wander inside and view the brilliant six story Tiffany glass rotunda, then share a treat from the old fashioned Crystal Palace ice cream parlor. Jutting almost a mile into Lake Michigan is the popular destination, Navy Pier. From the pier take a romantic dinner cruise, stroll through the enclosed Crystal Gardens, ride a carousel, or kiss at the top of the 150 foot Ferris wheel. See other spectacular Lake Michigan and Chicago views from the Sears Tower, 110 stories high, or the observatory on the 94th floor of the Hancock building.

Ninety miles Northwest of Chicago is the state¡¯s second largest city, Rockford. The Anderson Japanese Gardens are worth visiting with a waterfall, ponds, and an old teahouse. Sinnissippi Gardens is another romantic place to walk hand in hand through the greenhouse and offers concerts in the summers and holiday lights in the winters. Rockford has big city attractions such as a riverfront park, museums, theatres, shops, art galleries, hotels, and restaurants.

To escape the city lights, drive eighty miles from Rockford to Galena, a charming river town set in the bluffs of the Northwest corner of Illinois. 85% of Galena is designated as a National Historic District and Victorian era houses sit along the Galena River. Visit nineteenth century buildings such as Ulysses S. Grant¡¯s home and the Belvedere Mansion. Stay at a cozy bed and breakfast downtown, walk to shops and restaurants, ride on a horse-drawn buggy, or even in a hot air balloon.
