To begin your exploration of the beauty and wonder that is Kuala Lumpur, you must first visit the quaint Malaysia Tourist Information center, otherwise known as the MATIC. In the lovely building, surrounded by lush grounds, you will find audio-visual aides that paint a general picture of both country and city. It is here that you could exchange your money, take a trishaw ride, or even get your first taste of Malaysian cuisine in a restaurant in the right wing. 

Then it¡¯s off to the Central Market, which really isn¡¯t a market but more of cultural center where you can view plays, shadow puppetry, get your fortune told, or even take a dance class! It is a wonder of architecture that won the Coronation Architecture Award in 1953. 

But, if culture isn¡¯t your style, and you¡¯re more drawn to the outdoors, or you¡¯re planning a lovely time for your significant other, then you should visit one of the many breathtaking gardens. The first on your list should be the Kuala Lumpur Lake Gardens, which is by far the most popular of the city¡¯s gardens, with picturesque views, and a bit of history thrown in to boot. Then again, you may wish to visit the Orchid Garden, which showcases over a thousand international varieties of the beautiful and delicate flower. 

If gardens aren¡¯t to your taste, or you have visited the city for religious reasons, then one of the many Mosques might interest you. The Masjid Jame is one of the first Mosques of the city, and rests on the convergence of the Klang and Gambak rivers, which is the birthplace of the city. There is also the Sri Mahamariaman Temple, which is the most ornate and elaborate Hindu temple in the country. 

For those of you that are more historically inclined, there are many different Museums and Galleries for you to choose from. The National Museum, built in the style of the Malay Palace, introduces you to the interesting history of the country, and catches the eye with the beautiful murals that depict the country¡¯s past. There is also the National Art Gallery, which mostly focuses on contemporary artists, though it does house a few dozen older collections obtained through various means throughout the years. 

Or perhaps you would like to visit places with historical significance, such as the Dataran Merdeka, which showcases the influence of the British occupation there in Malaysia, and is home to one of the best cricket greens this side of England. Or you could peer up at the rather large and imposing residence of the Yang Dipertuan Agong (the King), as it sits high on its hillock, surrounded by lush gardens, and extravagantly beautiful lawns.

Perhaps you enjoy a good book now and again. If so, visit the illustrious National Library, a fairly recent addition to Kuala Lumpur. It houses some interesting books on Malaysia by people who know the land best¡­people who lived there, as well as some ancient manuscripts.
