Your friends have just returned home from a relaxing vacation in Kiribati.  The first question you ask them is probably, where is Kiribati?  Kiribati is a lesser known vacation spot in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.  It is a small republic consisting of thirty three separate islands.  The Kiribati islands are located about one-half of the way from Hawaii to Australia.  The island nation has a population of roughly seventy thousand Micronesians and hosts a generous portion of tourists yearly.  

Kiribati has a hot and humid climate; however the trade winds keep the island nice and cool.  The islands are subject to typhoons from the months of November to March and have occasional visits from tornadoes.  By and large, however, the islands have decent weather but citizens live under the constant threat of flooding.  Some of the islands have sewage and disposal problems as a result of the low water levels.  The general terrain of the islands is low-lying coral atolls surrounded by large and extensive reefs.  With over thirty three islands of beauty to explore it is no wonder why some people travel far and wide to visit.  

So, what do you have to look forward to after you¡¯ve made the long journey to Kiribati?  The islands natural beauty lends itself to a numerous outdoor tours.  There are many outing adventures offered to tourists that showcase all the breathtaking sights of Kiribati.   The lagoon tour is especially popular among visitors, as are the hiking and walking excursions.  The diverse and unusual population of birds indigenous to Kiribati makes this destination a wonderful choice for advice birders or people who simply enjoy nature.

Located off the beaten path, yet significantly in the Pacific zone, Britain detonated three hydrogen bombs near Christmas Island as part of its nuclear testing program in 1957.  Artifacts and historical tidbits have been gathered on the island and made to use in some of the nation¡¯s buildings.  A tour of the Parliament Building can be a good indoor activity if you are anxious to get out of the sun for a few hours.  If it¡¯s a rainy day and you feel like doing more inside sightseeing check out the Kiribati National Library and Archives.  

If you are interested in ¡°doing¡± more than you are ¡°seeing¡±, then you should choose an activity that allows you to catch a glimpse of the amazing marine wildlife the islands have to offer up close.  Snorkeling and scuba diving are two favorite tourist activities because of the great variety of marine life nestled in the many atolls and coral reefs.  

If you are a fan of fishing you will not be disappointed by what the islands have to offer. In fact, the most popular reason for a Kiribati visit is fishing.  Christmas Island is Kiribati¡¯s largest and most remote landmass and offers the best fishing.  Die-hard bone fishermen head for Christmas Island, which gas miles of hard white flats, large fish populations, and consistently warm, dry weather.

While fishing alone does draw visitors to the Islands, those who make the trip get an interesting glimpse into the Kiribati culture as well.  The Kiribati culture is based on Micronesian beliefs and practices.  There is much emphasis placed on hospitality and a family atmosphere.  The environment is very relaxed and daily activities revolve around eating, drinking, and dancing. If you are lucky enough to be in Kiribati in mid-July you will see the Independence Day celebration.  On this day there are traditional dances, a parade, and a multitude of patriotic displays throughout the island nation.  Canoe racing and other water sports are part of the highlights of the day as well.  Traditional floor shows can be enjoyed during festive occasions such as Independence Day or by request at the hotels on Christmas Island and in Tarawa.  Kamei, male dances, and Kabuti, female dances, are most typically performed in the ¡°ruoja¡± style.  In this type of dance the women use distinctively Polynesians hand and hip movements and decorate their bodies with colorful and elaborate ornamentation and dress 

If you are sold on visiting Kiribati you should be prepared for a long and expensive trip¡ªdepending on where you are flying from.  Air Marshall and Air Nauru connect wit Kiribati on international routes.  There are connections available from Fiji, Majuro in the Marshall Islands, and from Honolulu, in Hawaii.  Sydney and Brisbane also offer connections to the Kiribati Islands.  Once you reach the islands you have a bevy of hotels to choose from.  Some of the resorts recommended by various tourist web pages and guidebooks are the Lagoon Breeze Lodge, the Otintaai Hotel, the Sweet Coconut Motel, Mary¡¯s Motel, and the Tarawa Motel.  

If you do visit Kiribati you should be familiar with their cultural practices and ethos.  Since Christianity has had a major influence on the islands it is suggested that women visitors dress modestly in villages, towns, and particularly in the outlying regions.  While the temperature can be humid there are ways of respecting the cultural and religious beliefs of the natives and staying cool.  Sarongs are available in local stores and are ideal for the tropical climate.  Kiribati is not a Mecca for traveling; while there are hotels with amenities it is by no means a luxury vacation destination.  Going to Kiribati is a cultural and adventurous experience as well as a vacation, so it is not recommended that a novice traveler book a flight without doing the proper research first.
