The Cajun music, old houses of legend, and the famed French Quarter are luring you to visit New Orleans.  However, if you have children, it may make you hesitate.  Known for its wild, adult-oriented Mardi Gras celebration, this historical Louisiana city is not what one would think of as child friendly.  Yet, New Orleans is a fun place for the entire family and has many attractions to keep the kids happy and occupied. 

One attraction that the kids won¡¯t soon forget is a visit to the Audubon Zoo.  Rated as one of the best zoos in the U.S., its sprawling acres contain many animal species.  Monkey Hill is fun to see, as is the Alligator Swamp, which houses the many indigenous animals of Southern Louisiana.  If your trip is planned in October, make sure to check out the zoo¡¯s Swamp Fest.  Usually taking place during two weekends, Cajun and Zydeco music will have you and the kids dancing down the sidewalks!

After the trip to the zoo, the Audubon Nature Center is also interesting and relaxing.  Take a walk on the nature trail or view the vista of the night sky in the planetarium.  However, if this is too tame for the kids, take them to the Audubon Aquarium.  15,000 creatures of the sea have taken up residency here and petting baby sharks to seeing rare, white alligators are just two of the many things to take in.  You can also view playful sea otters and penguins here. 

Another attraction that has just opened in New Orleans is Six Flags.  Take your kids on more than 35 rides and let them say ¡®hi¡¯ to Bugs Bunny!  Just remember, before going make sure you inquire about the times this theme park is open. 

If you want to give your children a taste of culture, the Cabildo Museum houses Louisiana history.  Located on the site that the Louisiana Purchase was signed, myriad histories of the various people come together to make one interesting story.

For an afternoon diversion, take the kids to Storyland, a large playground that has 26 large characters from various children¡¯s stories.  There is also a playhouse here run by Rapunzel.  This attraction is sure to delight and amuse younger children.

Taking the kids through the French Quarter during the day is something the entire family will enjoy.  Sampling the fare at Cajun restaurants and browsing through the various shops will also show your children the culture of that area.  The Canal Streetcar is also a fun way to get to from one place to another.  

 One good thing about visiting New Orleans is that most of the attractions are very easy on the budget.  These fun diversions will cost a family of four less than 30.00 for admission.  Six Flags is the one exception but it is a theme park after all!  New Orleans is a romantic vacation for you and your significant other while, at the same time, a place of fun and adventure for the children.  The relaxed atmosphere of the city and the many interesting things to see will make good memories for a long time to come.
