Summer is the season of outdoor fun, and many people plan at least one trip to the beach during the hot summer months. Although the beach is certainly a great destination for family fun, it is important to remember that safety should always be a top priority. Putting into practice a few simple tips will make your family¡¯s trip to the beach much safer and much more enjoyable.
If at all possible, it is best to swim at an area on the beach that has a lifeguard nearby. Many popular public beaches now have lifeguards on duty during the summer months. Lifeguards are generally stationed at regions of the beach that have been approved for their safety for public swimming, which means the waters are likely safer at a beach with a lifeguard. Lifeguards are trained in prevention and emergency response. They will be able to provide an important role in keeping your family safe at the beach.
Before letting your children take a dip in the water, make sure they have adequate knowledge of how to swim in the ocean. Swimming lessons are vital in keeping your child safe in the water, but they should also be aware of the different dangers involved in swimming in the ocean. Currents, waves and tides can be very dangerous if swimmers aren¡¯t careful. Always watch your children closely while they are swimming, or enjoy a swim yourself while keeping an eye on them and the water conditions.
Protect your children from harmful UV rays by slathering on the sun screen before heading out to the beach. Nothing can ruin a trip to the beach more quickly than sunburn. Remember that sun screen should always be reapplied after you swim. It¡¯s also a good idea to bring a larger beach umbrella to provide your family with a cool, shady spot to relax in throughout the day.
Bring lots of water for your family to drink during your trip to the beach. The body can dehydrate quickly though swimming in the ocean and being exposed to the sun. Taking frequent water breaks will help keep your children hydrated and healthy.
The ocean is powerful and should not be underestimated. Make sure your child never goes into water that is more than knee deep. Waves and currents can quickly change and overtake your child if they are in deep water. Remember to tell your children to never dive into the ocean water. It is almost impossible to perceive the true depth of the ocean at any spot, and diving into water that is too shallow is extremely dangerous. Also, remind your children to quietly observe animals living at the beach without touching them. Wildlife at the beach is fascinating, but it is safest to leave it alone.
There are a few small items that are important to keep handy during your trip to the beach. A first-aid kit is good to have on hand in case you have to deal with any small cuts or scrapes while you are at the beach. Avoid swimmer¡¯s ear by bringing a pair of ear plugs. A pair of goggles can help your child enjoy the ocean water without the burning effect saltwater can often have on the eyes. Always bring sandals for when you are walking on the beach. Hot sand can burn, and you don¡¯t want to risk stepping on broken glass or shells. |
