For couples that enjoy each other¡¯s company, Kansas could be your getaway of choice. With lots of wide-open space, endless skies and numerous attractions, the Sunflower State offers great opportunities beyond the glitz and glitter of other tourist destinations.
From old-west cemeteries to space exploration, Kansas provides travel and fun, even on a tight budget. There is no charge to enjoy the endless fields of wheat gently blowing in the breeze, or the bison grazing on the open plains. Even some major attractions are free or available for a small entrance fee.
The state¡¯s major cities include the capital, Topeka, 60 miles west of Kansas City on I-70. Here couples can visit the historic capital building with its gleaming copper dome, the national Combat Air Museum and the Brown vs. Board of Education National Historic Site and Museum.
Wichita, the largest city, following World War II became known as the Air Capital of the World, because of the numerous aircraft manufacturers that sprang up, spawning several air and flight related museums.
Of course, Kansas City and wealthy Johnson County sit regally on the eastern border where the Kansas and Missouri rivers create a natural division between Kansas and Missouri.
Fun in the Great Outdoors
Just east of Hill City, on Highway 24, couples can see the Great Kansas Buffalo Herd. This is open range country which still bears the deeply cut grooves of covered wagons heading west on the Santa Fe Trail. Here, from dawn to dusk you can see bison in their natural habitat, whisking you back hundreds, even thousands of years.
Hunting and fishing abound at more than twenty State Parks and eight Federal Wildlife Areas. There are over 100 lakes open for public use and dozens of rivers, including access to the mighty Missouri, Kaw and Kansas.
Fishing, for those whose interests are purely recreational, includes trout, black crappie and perch. For the true lunker-seekers, large, small mouth and spotted bass await. Plump channel catfish will challenge the strength of both line and pole.
The seasonal or seasoned hunter will find deer, elk, and antelope fattened on corn and wheat gleaned from the fields of America¡¯s breadbasket. Together with wild turkey, pheasant, and several species of waterfowl, the great plains can satisfy the most avid hunting couples.
Contact the Kansas Department of Wildlife for both hunting and fishing seasons and licensing information.
For Couples Better Suited to the Great Indoors
Kansas, it is said, has more museums per capita than any other state in the country. From the old west to space exploration, you can see it here in America¡¯s heartland.
Experience a taste of the old west at the weekly mule auction held every Saturday at the Kingman Activities center. Farm antiques, tack and other equipment are also auctioned in this remarkable prairie setting.
In infamous Dodge City, the Boot Hill Museum and Front Street will take you back in time to the1870¡¯s Kansas Territory. The museum and replication of Front Street, including the OK Corral, provide wonderful examples of Cowboy and Native American history. Reenacted gunfights and prairie living show the brutal realities of our nation's expansion to the west.
The Amelia Earhart Birthplace Museum is just a short drive northwest of Kansas City, in Atchison. Nestled in the tobacco and wine country of eastern Kansas, the actual home and birthplace of this mysterious and influential woman is today a top-flight museum, and a National Historic site. Daily tours and an annual Amelia Earhart Festival are among the site¡¯s offerings.
Located in Abilene, the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Center is built around the 19th-century Eisenhower family home. The library and museum commemorate the life and career of our 34th President who though born in Dennison, Texas, grew up in Abilene, Kansas.
Built of native Kansas limestone the Eisenhower Library offers five grand galleries depicting the childhood, military career and two terms as America¡¯s Commander-in-Chief.
The Place of Meditation is the final resting place of President Eisenhower, his wife, the former Mamie Doud of Denver, Colorado and their first-born son, Doud Dwight, who died of scarlet fever at 3 years of age.
At the other end of the spectrum, The Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center is a world renowned museum affiliated with the Smithsonian Institution. It features the largest collection of space artifacts outside of Washington D.C., including the largest collection of Russian artifacts in the western world. Here you will see the actual Apollo 13 Command Module, take in the IMAX dome and planetarium, and view the world¡¯s largest collection of space suits. For the young and the young-at-heart, there are innovative astronaut training camps, including Elderhostel for adventurers 55 and over.
History and technology come alive in many other museums and historic places scattered across the state. You can find the birthplaces and history of the famous and the infamous. From Langston Hughes, great African-American poet, to Wyatt Earp and The Cowboys of OK Corral fame, to the Native American Heritage Center, Kansas affords any interested couple, hours and days of exploration, fun and learning.
Art museums, peaceful prairies, and the legacy of the western frontier, Kansas is for lovers of the great outdoors in its natural state and those who love a sense of history unrivaled west of the Mississippi River. For a great getaway on a shoestring budget, set out on a fun journey to discover Kansas, land of Dorothy¡¯s OZ and as a former state tourist motto stated, the Land of Ahhhhhs. |
