Many day trips are within an easy driving distance from Kansas City. Families seeking a mini-vacation can find fun, education, and entertainment with a day's drive of home.

Just north of Kansas City on I-29, St. Joseph offers something for everyone.  Explore history at the Pattee House Museum at 12th and Penn Streets.  Be sure to visit the home where outlaw Jesse James was killed in 1882 - it's on the grounds of the Pattee House, once a luxury hotel.

A few blocks west visit the original Pony Express Stables.  Try to imagine living in the first apartment house west of the Mississippi at Robidoux Row Museum at Third and Poulin.  Bring along a picnic lunch to enjoy at Krug Park on the city's north side.  The lagoon is filled with ducks and other waterfowl.  See the longhorn cattle, burros, and deer throughout the park.  If picnics aren't your style, visit the Hoof and Horn Steakhouse near the old stockyards, St. Joe's oldest restaurant or try authentic Mexican cuisine at Barbosa's at 906 Sylvanie.

Visit the past at the Arrow Rock Historic Site in Arrowrock east of the city.  Experience the 1834 Huston Tavern, visit the home of noted artist George Caleb Bingham, and see where the Santa Fe Trail crossed the Missouri River.

Those seeking a spiritual retreat might want to spend a day in reflection at Conception Abbey in northwest Missouri.  Conception is an active Benedictine monastry and features the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception dating to 1891. Quiet grounds with beautiful gardens offer a restful retreat.

The Jesse James Farm and Museum at Kearney features James family memorbilia, the outlaw's original resting place, the family home, and more.

If outdoor pursuits are in order, visit Big Lake State Park near Mound City.  The 625 acre oxbow lake is teeming with fish and the surrounding state park is ideal for bird watching.  Another popular state park is Wakins Mill State Park east of Kearney.  Boating, swimming, and fishing are all permitted in the lake near the Watkins Woolen Mill, a historic mill.  Hiking and biking trails are also present.

Fort Osage at Sibley is a reconstructed 1808 fort and fur trading post above the Missouri River.  Living history programs are common and the visitor's center includes a gift shop.

Head west into Kansas to visit Fort Leavenworth in the town of Leavenworth.  This fort is the oldest active army post west of the Mississippi and visitors can tour the Frontier Army Musuem.

In Topeka, Kansas state capitol city, visitors can view the State Capitol building. The historic Ward-Meade park encompasses a Victorian home furnished in period style that serves as a museum.  At Gage Park, attractions include a minature train and a restored 1908 carousel.  Swimming pool, tennis courts, a conservatory, and the Reinisch Rose Garden make this park a popular place to while away the hours.

Animal lovers will enjoy the Topeka Zoological Park on Gage Boulevard.  The Tropical Rain Forest habitat contains plants, birds, and animals under a dome and many other zoo residents delight all ages.

A trip to Topeka can also focus on the Kansas Museum of History on Sixth Avenue.  The Children's Discovery Place area allows kids to dress in frontier style clothing and to visit a teepee.

Take a trip south to Lamar, Missouri to visit the Harry S. Truman Birthplace State Historical site.  Many of the family's original furnishings are intact and the town of Lamar has its' own small town charm.  Try lunch at The Blue Top Inn, an area restaurant for decades that still features old-fashioned plate lunch specials.

Truman fans can also visit the Harry S. Truman farm home in Grandview or the Truman Presidential Museum and Library in Independence.

Take along a picnic lunch to visit the Locust Creek Covered Bridge Historical Site off Highway 36.  Built in 1868, this is the longest of the four remaining covered bridges in MIssouori.

Nature lovers will delight in the Missouri Arboretum at Maryville.  On the grounds of Northwest Missouri State University, the Arboretum has more than 120 varities of trees.  More than 1,300 trees are on the campus.
