Located about an hour¡¯s drive northeast of New Orleans, and frequently outshone by it, Baton Rouge is a treasure waiting to be discovered. If you¡¯d like to get away from the tourist crowds in New Orleans, then hop on up and take a peek at the delights awaiting you up the road a bit. Here are some things to do that you won¡¯t want to miss:
1. The USS Kidd Veteran¡¯s Memorial is a World War II destroyer located on the Mississippi River. The ship has been restored to its former condition, and is the only ship of the World War II era in the United States that has undergone such an extensive renovation. Visitors have the pleasure of getting to walk around and experience the entire ship, from sleeping quarters to the galley. The Veteran¡¯s Memorial also includes an A-7E Corsair attack aircraft and a restored P-40 fighter plane, in addition to the names of the 7000 Louisianans who died in the war. An eternal flame resides near the names, lending the memorial an aura of solemnity.
2. The Baton Rouge Zoo features over 1800 animals from all over the world, including white tigers. It also has an aquarium, a railroad and a special display of parrots and other tropical birds. Kids are guaranteed to enjoy a trip to this zoo.
3. Take a refreshing walk at the Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center. Located on over 100 acres, the center has over two miles of trails that will take the visitor through wooded areas and swamps. The trails are self-guided, and you will have the pleasure of seeing some amazing Cypress trees.
4. Baton Rouge is the location of Louisiana State University, which offers a variety of must-see attractions. Go to the LSU Museum of Art, which features everything from British paintings to Chinese jade, or take a walk at the Hilltop Arboretum, which showcases a variety of native plants. Another option is visiting the LSU Rural Life Museum and Windrush Gardens. The grounds have more than 25 buildings dating from the 19th century, for a step back into Southern Louisiana¡¯s past. You can also see collections of antique farm implements, vehicles and other necessities of pre-industrial life in Louisiana.
5. The Louisiana Old State Capitol is a political history museum that is a showplace of Gothic and Victorian architecture. The stained glass dome is definitely worth a second look.
6. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Old Arsenal Museum, built in 1838, was used by the military in the Southwest, Mexican and Civil Wars. It features multiple exhibits on military history. Military history enthusiasts will enjoy this attraction.
7. Go to the Old Governor¡¯s Mansion for a peek at the building built in 1930 by Governor Huey P. Long, perhaps one of the most controversial governors that Louisiana has had. Also listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the mansion offers tours that tell about the governors who lived within its walls, and showcases memorabilia from those times.
8. The Southern University Museum of Art (SUMA) can be found on the Southern University campus. It features four African art galleries and four African-American art galleries. It is a delight to find this jewel that has arisen from the ashes of a deeply segregated past.
9. At the Louisiana Art and Science Museum, you can see and experience everything from fine art exhibitions to hands-on activities for children. A bonus is the Challenger Learning Center, which simulates space missions. Located at this museum are the Irene W. Pennington Planetarium and ExxonMobile Space Theater, which serve multiple purposes as a planetarium, a laser show screen and a venue for films shown on its huge 60-foot dome screen.
10. Drive around the city and look at its wonderful homes. The historic neighborhood Beauregard Town is a good place to start. Then go into the Garden District, which as its name implies, feature beautiful streets, and of course, beautiful houses. Perhaps one of the most stunning homes of all is the Mt. Hope Plantation, built in 1790.
Baton Rouge sets the stage to experience its sights in a laid back, unhurried manner. Give yourself enough time to enjoy the sites that you want to see, and definitely visit the Main Street Market and buy yourself a cup of coffee, and perhaps a praline or two. Browse the many antique stores, and return from your vacation with a touch of the relaxation that the Deep South can bring.
