You've saved, you've planned, you've dreamt of the perfect vacation and now it's finally here. With all of the packing and preparation you've gone through to make your ideal trip come true, what could possibly go wrong?
Unfortunately, that answer could be "quite a lot" if an emergency illness, accident or freaky act of Nature catches you off guard during your travels.
While commercial carriers, cruise ships and tour directors will generally make every effort to accommodate clients when a problem occurs at the service end, you're on your own the rest of the time. The following types of insurance--available at competitive rates via the Internet or your broker--can provide you with peace of mind prior to departure.
TRAVEL MEDICAL INSURANCE
What if you broke your leg, got bitten by a snake, or had a heart attack while on vacation? Would you be able to pay the expenses incurred in getting you to a hospital and receiving necessary treatment? Travel medical insurance offers varying levels of coverage for individuals who are either going abroad for leisure or who will be studying or working in a foreign country for an extended period of time. Similar to American prepaid health plans, the ill or injured party has a specified deductible which is paid out-of-pocket prior to the insurance carrier kicking in the balance. For outpatient services, travelers are required to submit claim forms and receipts in order to be reimbursed for fees that were paid to the overseas medical providers. Individuals with known medical conditions (i.e., epilepsy, heart problems, HIV, etc.) are also asked to declare these as part of the pre-certification process in order to ensure admittance to a facility equipped to deal with their particular health problems.
EMERGENCY MEDICAL EVACUATION
One of the components of travel medical insurance plans relates to emergency evacuations. Let's say that you are on a backpacking adventure in the middle of the Congo. You're bitten by a bug that causes your extremities to blister and swell to three times their normal size. Unfortunately, the nearest medical clinic is a one room shack with a part-time doctor and outdated equipment. Doesn't exactly inspire confidence, does it? Depending on the amount of coverage paid for, this type of insurance addresses the cost of transporting you to either a hospital of your choice or the nearest hospital that can handle this type of medical emergency.
ACCIDENTAL DEATH AND DISMEMBERMENT
AD&D coverage involves lump sum settlements to you or your beneficiaries in the event of loss of limb, loss of eyesight, or accidental death. These policies are further broken down to address accidents that occur while one is aboard a common carrier (planes, trains, ships, etc.) or whether the incident takes place at any time or under any circumstance during the specified coverage period. An additional element of AD&D is the repatriation of one's remains in the event that death occurs in a foreign country. Without such insurance, the individual's family is required to bear the expense of having the deceased returned to his/her own country for burial or cremation.
TERRORISM INSURANCE
Post 9/11, concerns have increased regarding the safety of overseas and domestic travel. Although many AD&D policies currently include a rider for acts of terrorism, individuals who are purposely traveling to an unstable or high-risk country will pay a higher premium for protection. Such coverage also calls for a supplemental application detailing the nature of the trip and the projected itinerary during the covered period.
TRIP CANCELLATION
At the time an airline reservation is made or a tour is booked, the issuing agency will have delineated its cancellation and refund policies. While they are almost always amenable to reimbursement in the event of death of the traveler or an immediate family member, what happens if (1) you're hospitalized with pneumonia, (2) the airline goes on strike or goes belly-up, or (3) a delay causes you literally miss the boat? Trip Protection insurance is a reimbursement plan that covers the percentage of expenses that the carrier or tour package dealers are not authorized to refund to the affected traveler.
BAGGAGE INSURANCE
Depending on the circumstances, your homeowners insurance will probably cover the theft or damage of your personal possessions while traveling. Likewise, the airlines will pay a limited sum in the event they lose your checked bags en route. Unfortunately, these amounts rarely cover the replacement value of these items. You should also be aware that hotels, motels, inns and cruise ships offer no reimbursement at all for stolen or damaged contents. Accordingly, you may want to purchase separate protection for your belongings.
MULTI-TRIP INSURANCE PACKAGES
If work or fun has you globe-trotting for over a third of the year, it may be cost-effective to look into an annual insurance program. These packages cover a combination of AD&D, major medical, trip cancellation, and anything else that might arise in the course of travel. |
