Indiana boasts miles of beautiful lakeshore, rich farmland, quaint towns, and the big city of Indianapolis. In a state with the motto ¡®The Crossroads of America,¡¯ there are different romantic getaways in each corner of Hoosier country.

In Northwest Indiana couples can ¡°do the dunes¡± as the locals say. Indiana Dune National Lakeshore is composed of 15,000 acres of Lake Michigan coastal land covered in sand dunes and an impressive variety of plants and trees. The three mile West Beach has swimming areas, picnic tables, camping, and a boardwalk to the 110 foot high observation deck. Horseback riding, swimming, bicycling, hiking, and bird-watching are all easy activities to do throughout a day at the dunes.

Near Michigan City, Mount Baldy, known as a ¡°living dune,¡± is a romantic sand dune to observe.  Mount Baldy appears to constantly move and change and the unique sand ¡®sings¡¯ as you walk. From the top, at 123 feet high, you can see Chicago¡¯s skyline on a clear day. For those feeling especially athletic, the tallest dune to climb is 192 foot Mount Tom located in Indiana Dunes State Park. The sunset over Lake Michigan is stunning atop any of the young or old sand dunes along the lakeshore.

Two miles south of Indiana Dunes State Park, luxurious accommodations are found in Chesterton at the Indian Oak Resort and Spa. This upscale resort features rooms with views of Lake Chubb and sensual amenities such as Jacuzzis, fireplaces, and massages. Its setting includes 100 acres of trails for couples to find solitude in the woods. The small town of Chesterton is an antique collector's nirvana with many shops in classic buildings and a picturesque park and gazebo in the middle of the downtown.

More quiet, romantic places can be discovered in the Northeast region of Indiana, home to hundreds of lakes, wooded hills, and wildflowers. Back country roads all over Steuben County lead to nature preserves, trails, quaint shops, bed and breakfasts, and marinas with water recreation activities. Small planes provide tours with stunning aerial views of the ¡°mirror lakes¡± during any season. 1,023 acre Pokagon State Park with a boathouse, swimming beach, cabins, and inn, sits on the shores of two of Indiana¡¯s many lakes, Snow Lake and Lake James. 

Shipshewana is a tranquil Amish town found in Northeast Lake Country. Small shops line the streets selling gifts, handmade crafts, and Amish necessities that run without electricity. Drive a beautiful country road through farmland to the Amish Acres Inn, a restored Amish farmhouse in Nappanee. The inn includes a dinner theatre, buggy rides, and a big front porch with rocking chairs creating a peaceful, romantic atmosphere.

If a city spark is what lights your fire, visit Indianapolis, the largest city in the state. For some culture, catch a concert or play at the Madame Walker Theatre Center, named after the U.S.¡¯s first female, self-made millionaire. Sporting events abound in the capital city including professional football, basketball, and the internationally known Indy 500 car race. Three star hotels are within walking distance of stadiums, theatres, trendy restaurants, and the 250 acre White River State Park. At the far end of the park is the 64 acre Indianapolis Zoo and adjacent to the zoo is a lovely botanical garden.

Sixty miles south of the city lights of Indianapolis is the charming town of Nashville. Set in a valley amongst the blue hills of Southern Indiana, many artists make this pretty ¡®log cabin¡¯ town their home. Stroll down the romantic streets of Nashville, peering in art galleries, antique and craft shops, and small inns. Two miles east of town is Indiana¡¯s largest state park, Brown County State Park, with camping and 90 miles of hiking and horseback riding trails.

On the banks of the Ohio River, 86 miles Southeast of Indianapolis is the old steamboat town of Madison. It is now a quiet town with turn-of-the-century homes and quaint stores. West of downtown is Clifty Falls State Park offering a romantic setting with waterfalls, a creek, a canyon, and rugged trails. Within the park, there is camping, a lodge with upscale suites, and a restaurant with a view of Madison and the Ohio River.
