During the hot summer months, water parks are a lot of fun, and Illinois has quite a few scattered throughout the state.  Some are small, mainly serving their communities, while others are large and draw people from a large area.  While many have some things in common, such as slides, each has its own particular style and attractions.  Most are outdoor parks, open during the warm summer months, but there are some indoor facilities that remain open all year.  Many are operated by local park districts, though others are privately owned.

Bensenville¡¯s Park District operates one of the water parks.  This park features a slide that is 155 feet long, as well as two slides in the diving well.  The pool features a zero-depth entry, and in addition there is a children¡¯s water play area.  This area is only 18 inches deep, and has animal sprinklers.  Aside from the water attractions, the park includes a playground and a sand volleyball court.

Fox Valley¡¯s Park District operates Splash Country Water Park.  Its features include a sand play area and a volleyball court, in addition to the water features.  The ¡°lazy river¡± is 1100 feet long and is the second largest in Illinois.  It also has both enclosed and open tube/flume slides, a kid¡¯s water area for children under 48 inches tall, and a zero-depth pool.

Sea Lion Park is operated by the Lisle Park District.  This park includes the typical zero-depth entry pool and a variety of slides.  In addition, it has a mini lazy river, a leisure pool, and a lap pool.  There is a pool intended for teenagers and pre-teens, and another for small children, with age-specific play areas.

The Des Plaines Park District also has a water park, Mystic Waters Family Aquatic Center.  This facility offers ¡°Beluga Beach¡±, a splash playground; ¡°Dolphin Bay¡±, a zero-depth pool; ¡°Sea Lion Falls¡±, a 12-foot dive (or drop) into the water; and ¡°Crocodile Cove¡±, a lazy river.

Rainbow Falls Water Park is located in Elk Grove Village, and is operated by the Elk Grove Park District.  This park has a miniature golf course, in addition to the water attractions.  These attractions include a paddle boat, wading pool, waterslides of various types, and a 300-foot tube ride.  It also has a Funhouse, which combines a three-story play structure with plenty of opportunities to get wet.

Cypress Cove is operated by the Woodridge Park District.  It includes six water slides, including body slides, a tube slide, and a drop slide.  It also has a slide for little kids and a zero-depth pool, a lazy river, and a sand play area.  In addition to the water attractions, Cypress Cove has a stage for concerts and other events.

The Bolingbrook Park District also operates a water park, Pelican Harbor.  This park has both indoor and outdoor facilities.  Aside from a lazy river, water slides, and a zero depth pool, Pelican Harbor has a water spray playground, a diving well, and an indoor lap pool and whirlpool.  It also has a volleyball area.

The Schaumburg Park District¡¯s WaterWorks is an indoor park.  WaterWorks offers three water slides, a water playground, whirlpool, diving pool, lap pool, and zero-entry pool.  Since it is an indoor park, it is open all year, for those who don¡¯t want to limit the fun to just the summer months.

Turtle Island Water Park in Hillside is a bit unusual, in that it was intended to be a wading pool only, with no full-size pool at the facility.  The park was designed for smaller children, up to age ten.  The entry is gradual and it only goes to 2 ? feet deep at its maximum.  The pool has several slides and water fountains.

Racing Rapids Water Park, in East Dundee, is another popular park.  It features a children¡¯s area, plenty of water slides, and a lazy river.  One of its other attractions is bumper boats, motorized boats that people can navigate just like bumper cars.  Aside from the water attractions, it also has Go-Karts available.

Knights Action Park is located in Springfield.  This park covers over 62 acres, with plenty of both land and water based rides.  The land-based attractions include miniature golf, Go-Karts, Laser Tag, and a driving range.  Some of the water-based attractions are water slides, bumper boats, and a seven-acre lake with pedal boats.  It also has a ride called the Devil Ray, a four-story water slide that subjects a person to up to three times the normal force of gravity.

Grafton hosts the Raging Rivers water park.  This park features a wave pool, plenty of slides, an endless river, raft rides, and a children¡¯s area.  It also has an area called ¡°Treehouse Harbor¡±, which has a tunnel, rope pulls, and of course plenty of water ¨C including a 1500 gallon bucket to get people thoroughly wet.

East Peoria features Splashdown, a three-acre water park with a lazy river, splash pool, and plenty of slides.  This park advertises itself as 100% disabled-accessible, so those with limitations don¡¯t need to miss out on the fun.

Magic Waters is yet another park, located in Rockford.  Its attractions include the typical slides, wave pool, river, and children¡¯s area.  It also includes the ¡°Splash Blaster¡±, a two-person raft ride that includes an 80 foot rise, tunnel, 35-foot plunge, and a 30-foot drop.

Splash Station is located in Joliet, and it includes slides, a river, and a zero-depth entry pool.  One of its premier features is a racing slide.  The racing slide is 200 feet long and features six tracks.

The Ozzi Water Park, located in Palatine, has slides, bumper boats, and a three-foot deep activity pool.  It also features water games, such as water balloons, and basketball played on a court with open ¡°fire hydrants¡± showering the players.

Dolphin Cove, located in Carpentersville, features the usual slides and a zero-depth entry pool, as well as a twelve-foot diving well and a fountain with bubblers, flow gates, and paddle wheel.

Grand Bear Lodge in Starved Rock includes an indoor water park, covering 24,000 square feet.  It has a wave pool, water slides, a lazy river, and a variety of pools.  One of the slides is described as a ¡°motion and sound adventure¡±, a description that¡¯s sure to make people curious.  This is one of Illinois¡¯ newer water parks.

Another of the newer water parks is Hurricane Harbor, located in Gurnee by Six Flags Great America.  This park, covering over 15 acres, has a Caribbean theme.  It includes over 25 water slides, a river with rapids, and a wave pool, among other attractions.

As you can see, Illinois has a terrific variety of water parks, and new ones will undoubtedly be opened as time goes on.  While some of the features are common among many parks, there are some terrific variations.  Check out some of the parks near you, and have fun while you cool off during the warm summer months!
