Houston Information for Travelers and Newcomers

Located in eastern Texas, this bustling city is the fourth largest  in the United States. There are many attractions in Houston, including nightlife, culture and sports. The downtown business district is filled with high rise buildings and parking lots. The unique underground tunnels of Houston make visiting the many shops and businesses very convenient. Just park your car in the many parking lots and walk in the air conditioned underground tunnels to just about any destination. Houston has two airports, Bush Intercontinental Airport located about 35 miles north of downtown Houston, and William P. Hobby Airport located 11 miles southeast of downtown Houston. There are over 100 bus lines serving the greater Houston area, however, traveling by car is the best way to get around in Houston. The parking lots and attractions are clustered together allowing for an easy walk. Consensus of opinions says that late spring and the early summer months are the best times to travel to Houston, when the rainfall and humidity taper off.  Some of the major events in Houston are as follows:

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo

This event lasts for 17 days from mid-February thru March. Famous cowboys ride broncos and bulls in the Astrodome.  There are also big name country music acts as well.

Houston International Festival

Beginning in the third week of April, this multi cultural event consists of music, food and art.  Other festivals in April include the Houston International Film Festival and the Westheimer Colony Arts Festival.

Juneteenth

This event begins June 19 and lasts for several days.  This is a celebration for the emancipation of the slaves in 1865. Gospel and blues festivals and other local African American celebrations abound in June.

Hermann Park

This beautiful wooded park is located just south of downtown Houston. At the park you will find a huge statute of Sam Houston, a Texas pioneer and founder of the city which bears his name. The Houston Zoological Gardens is also found in the park featuring gorillas, tropical birds, lions, bats, and many other creatures and plants.

Johnson Space Center

The center is located just southeast of downtown and can be reached by the many bus lines that serve Houston.  Most of the planning and training for the NASA Program takes place at the Johnson Space Center. At the Center, you will find a theme park section, which features Saturn Automobiles with space age plastics and a collection of Lego rockets. You will also find actual artifacts of the space program including Faith 7, the Mercury Capsule used to orbit the earth, the Apollo 17 command module and a variety of moon rocks that you can touch. There are many other exhibits at the Johnson Center, so plan to spend the day.

Museum of Fine Arts

Located south of downtown Houston and Founded in 1900, this museum features collections of French impressionists, American modernists and Texan postmodernist artists. Other museums of interest are the Museum of Printing History, Museum of Natural History, and the Orange Show Foundation.
