Louisville sits on the banks of the Ohio River and its waterfront setting offers wonderful romantic attractions. Couples touring the largest city in Kentucky can enjoy parks and natural scenery, historic sights, culture, gambling and more.
From the waterfront at 4th and Main, view the computer generated Louisville Falls Fountain. Every fifteen minutes a geyser sprays water hundreds of feet into the air. An intimate time to experience the falls is after sunset when they are illuminated by a nightly colored light show.
At the riverfront wharf, near 4th Street and River Road, is the Belle of Louisville offering afternoon and sunset cruises. Built in 1914, and now designated as a National Historic Landmark, it is America¡¯s oldest operating steamboat. The 130-foot Star of Louisville is docked further down river under the Highway 31 Bridge offering entertainment, dinner, and dance cruises.
History is also found in the old shopping and residential district of West Main. Baseball aficionados will appreciate the Louisville Slugger Museum. The world¡¯s tallest bat, at 120 feet high, is displayed outside the museum on 8th and Main. Observe baseball memorabilia or watch your custom-made bat being created as you take a factory tour.
More magnificent history is discovered at the 148 year-old Cathedral of the Assumption on 5th Street. On the riverbanks, the 19th century Louisville Water Tower is now a contemporary art center and a National Historic Landmark.
The arts abound in Louisville beginning at the Kentucky Center for the Arts on 6th Street. Enjoy an opera, ballet, or symphony orchestra, and view a lovely sculpture display. Visit the 75 year-old Palace Theater and sit in velvet seats at a concert or musical.
Couples searching for some culture and southern elegance can tour the city¡¯s many historic mansions. Locust Grove is one of Louisville¡¯s most impressive National Historic Landmark¡¯s standing on 55 acres with a restored 18th century house and gardens. Whitehall on Lexington Road was built in the 1850¡¯s and boasts Victorian furnishings and a three level garden on 11 acres. On Bardstown Road is the Federal-style Farmington mansion built by slaves in 1810 and visited by Abraham Lincoln in 1841. This plantation home has a hidden stairway, original wood and glass and sits on 18 beautifully landscaped acres.
Couples seeking excitement will enjoy the Louisville spot famous for its two white spires, Churchill Downs. Just four miles from downtown, the horse track has hosted the Kentucky Derby since 1875. Louisville becomes Derby City for two weeks each May with festivals and parties in anticipation of the big horse race. At Churchill Downs, take an outdoor tour to see the thoroughbreds or stay inside and dine at the Sky Terrace restaurant. The Kentucky Derby Museum is located at the first gate and also has a restaurant and exhibits.
Higher stakes gambling can be found across the Ohio River, in New Albany, Indiana. Caesars Glory of Rome is the world¡¯s largest floating casino with four floors of extensive gaming and lounges.
A peaceful way to explore Louisville is through its impressive parks system. Louisville Olmstead Parks Conservancy is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and consists of 18 parks designed from the 1890¡¯s to the 1940¡¯s. The largest park in the system is the 739-acre Iroquois Park on Southern Parkway and Taylor Boulevard. Along with hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails, there is an amphitheater and an 18-hole golf course and clubhouse. Smaller parks include the 409-acre Cherokee Park, home to the Nettleroth Bird Sanctuary, and 333-acre Seneca Park with picnic areas, stables, and another 18-hole golf course.
After a day of touring Louisville¡¯s exciting, beautiful, and historic sights, there are many restaurants and hotels to suit every budget or preference.
