Lake Mansion is one of Reno¡¯s oldest homes. Built by William Marsh in 1877, the home was sold two years later to Myron Lake. Mr. Lake is often credited with establishing Reno in its early days. The home now serves as a museum and honorarium to the early days of Reno and its citizens. A visit to the mansion is a remarkable look at early Nevada architecture and period life. Lake Mansion made history again a century after it was built. It was moved from the original location to its current home a few blocks away, to help preserve this national landmark.
Reno is home to one of the unique museum displays in the world. The Liberty Belle Slot Collection, located in the Liberty Belle Saloon has delighted visitors for decades with its western memorabilia and one of a kind slot machine collection. The restaurant first opened its doors in 1958 and has been a favorite of the locals for generations. Owned by the Fey family, the saloon was named for their grandfather Charles Fey and his contribution to the slot machine. In 1899, Charles Fey invented The Liberty Bell slot machine, this machine is the forerunner of modern slot machines we see in casinos today.
The Nevada Historical Society is home to the oldest museum in Nevada. The society boasts one of the biggest exhibits on mining in Reno and surrounding areas, from the early prospectors on their way to the California Gold Rush to the discovery of The Comstock and mining in the area today. The society is also home to the largest historical library in Nevada.
The Nevada Museum of Art is currently home to nearly 2000 pieces in their permanent exhibits that highlight scenic Reno and the surrounding areas. Some of the exhibits are set up in a breathtaking panoramic view that allows visitors to take in the art on a landscape scale. The museum began in 1931 and now houses prominent local art as well as some of the more classical forms such as, Rodin.
The Fleischmann Planetarium and Science Center is open daily, offering visitors a unique look at our changing planet and solar system. With numerous changing galleries and several permanent exhibits, the whole family will be entertained touring the collection of local meteorites and interactive science exploration.
The National Automobile Museum is considered by many to be the premiere automobile museum in the world. With over 200 vehicles on display annually, the museum offers visitors a look into the automobiles from their birth to the present day. Some famous cars are on display, including a 1912 rambler from the movie Titanic and 1949 Mercury Coupe driven by James Dean in the film, Rebel Without a Cause.
Reno secured a place in western history during the California gold rush and the subsequent silver strikes throughout Nevada. From the early prospecting days to the start of Nevada¡¯s gaming industry, Reno has a legacy steeped in historical lore and tradition. |
