Whether your passion is Eighteenth century architecture or modern space travel, Saint Louis, Missouri has an historic site or museum for you. Saint Louis, the gateway to the west, was settled by fur traders and frontiersman. Many of the westward traveling pioneers built beautiful homes in Saint Louis in the Eighteenth and Nineteenth centuries. The following list of homes and mansions have been converted into museums, in the St Louis area. These homes represent the builders, owners, and people of all ethnicities and time periods that lived in them.

Eugene Field House and Toy museum - Located at 634 south Broadway, built in 1845. This home was part of a row of houses called Walch¡¯s Row. Eugene Field was a famous children¡¯s poet who wrote such works as Little Boy Blue, and Winken, Blinken, and Nod. The interior of the home reflects the Nineteenth century period when the fields occupied the home. The poets many possessions, and renowned  toy collection, are on display at the museum.

Samuel H Cupples House - Located at Saint Louis University and built in 1888. Samuel Cupples was a successful entrepreneur and philanthropist. This Victorian style mansion is probably the largest of its era in the Saint Louis area. This structure boasts forty two rooms at a cost of fifteen million dollars in today¡¯s currency. The massive sand stone walls and beautiful natural woodwork were carved by English craftsman. The tiffany stained glass windows, featuring engraved poems by author Eugene Fields, are a classic in there own right.

Chatllon-DeMenil House - Located at 3352 DeMenil Place, Saint Louis Missouri and built in 1848.This home was originally built as a two story brick ¡®Creole style¡¯ home. Chatllon was a fur trader and well known guide for the rich and famous Harvard educated men of the Eighteen Hundreds. Nicolas DeMenil bought the home in 1861. Deminil converted the old farm house into a mansion, redesigned in the Greek revival style. With the addition of numerous wrought iron pieces, this ornate mansion stands out above other mansions of the Eighteen Forty¡®s.

Tower Grove House - Located at 4344 Shaw, Saint Louis Missouri and built in 1849. Owner Henry Shaw was an entrepreneur and proprietor of a hardware and metal ware business. Shaw an Englishman who loved gardens founded the beautiful Missouri Garden, Botanical Garden and Tower Grove park. This stately mansion, with its unique center tower, is a must to see in Saint Louis.

Saint Louis Science Center - The third largest science center in the United States. Admission: Free. The whole family will enjoy this museum. There are seven hundred and fifty hands-on science and technology exhibits and experiments. Additional features include the discovery room for children, James S McDonald planetarium, and the Boeing Space Station.

The Jefferson National Expansion Museum - Located at the Arch in down town Saint Louis.  Here you will find the Arch, the museum of Westward Expansion, and the old Saint Louis court house.

Westward Expansion Museum - This museum literally explodes with artifacts, mounted animal specimens, and Indian Tepees. The Expedition of Lewis and Clark is fully displayed in detail.

Old Saint Louis Court House - Built  in 1849, this one of the oldest buildings still standing in Saint Louis. Once the scene of the famous ¡°Dred Scott decision¡± of 1847-50, the building is now a museum which displays the entire history of Saint Louis.

The Saint Louis Arch - Built in 1963-65, The Arch is a tangible memorial to the many early pioneers advancing west to find their fortunes and future and the most recognizable symbol of the city of Saint Louis.
