Congratulations! You've decided to take your family to Hawaii. You won't be disappointed: Hawaii consistently ranks in surveys as one of the world's top island destinations. Now that you've made the decision to go, you need to plan your trip. It's not difficult, because there's a wealth of information out there for you, in books and on the Internet. Get it done in three easy steps: choose an island, pick a season and make your reservations. 

CHOOSE AN ISLAND

The Hawaiian archipelago stretches more than 1,500 miles and comprises 132 tropical islands, reefs and shoals. You only get six islands to choose from, though. Two of the eight major islands are kapu (forbidden) to most tourists: Kaho'olawe is completely uninhabited and access to Ni'ihau is restricted to guests of the private owner and the native Hawaiians who live there. Don't worry, because that leaves six lovely possibilities: Oahu, Maui, Kauai, Molokai, Lanai and the Big Island.

You might choose Oahu if you want a mainland-like destination with a wide variety of tourist activities. This island is for the family that likes to have something planned every day. Oahu offers Pearl Harbor, the Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park, a zoo and an aquarium. If you have teenagers that love to shop, Oahu has big malls including the Ala Moana center in Honolulu and the Royal Hawaiian in Waikiki. 

Maui is known for its beautiful beaches, the fabulous resort towns of Wailea and Ka'anapali and unbeatable views of whales during the wintertime. The kids can learn about whales and sea turtles at the Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary and see Hawaiian marine life at the Maui Ocean Center, an aquarium in Ma'alaea. If you want to see a fabulous sunrise, take an early-morning bike ride down the dormant volcano Mount Haleakala. Your family might choose Maui if you seek the prototypical island vacation: lots of time relaxing on the beach and playing in the waves.

Kauai, quieter and wetter than Maui and Oahu, rewards the nature-loving family. If hiking to see waterfalls and canyons appeals, Kauai might be the island for you. Waimea Canyon, nicknamed "The Grand Canyon of the Pacific," offers incredible views. Kauai's gorgeous scenery has been seen in many movies and TV shows, including Jurassic Park and Gilligan's Island. 

The island of Hawaii, known as "the Big Island" to distinguish it from the state, was formed from five volcanoes. You'll find an actively erupting volcano, Kilauea, as well as the tallest mountain on earth (when measured from the ocean floor), Mauna Kea. Older children with an interest in geologic science may find this island most interesting. 

If you and your family want to experience Hawaiian culture and life while leaving mainland ways behind, check out Molokai or Lanai. These two lightly-populated islands, part of Maui County, have so far escaped the rampant resort development of their sister islands, but still offer plenty of lodging options.

Whichever island you choose, you'll find gorgeous beaches, lovely weather and ample water sport opportunities. You just can't go wrong. 

PICK A SEASON

There's no bad time to go to Hawaii: daytime temperatures in the resort towns of the islands generally range from 65 to 80 degrees year-round. However, there are budgetary and other planning considerations.

During the wintertime, humpback whales come to Hawaii to give birth. Animal-loving children would welcome the chance to see this special event. January and February are the best months to see whales. You won't find so many deals during this time period because so many mainlanders want to escape winter weather.

Summertime is a popular time for families with school-age children to travel to Hawaii. It's also a time you'll see many honeymooners vacationing after their weddings. Some areas of the islands can get very hot in summertime, so if you are sensitive to heat, check the summertime temperatures of your intended destination before making a commitment.

You might find the best deals during fall, when kids have returned to school but the snowbirds who live in Hawaii half the year and on the mainland half the year haven't arrived yet. If your children are younger than school age, or you don't mind their missing school, this is a good time to go.

It's difficult to find a reservation for a hotel or condominium over Thanksgiving and Christmas, so if this is your preferred time, get started early.

MAKE YOUR RESERVATIONS

Making reservations to get to Hawaii seems easy enough; just check out an online travel web site, right? Depending on what type of accommodation suits you, you might want to try a different approach. While you can find great resort and hotel room packages with that tactic, it doesn't work as well for condominium units or beach houses, which are more inconsistent in quality than resort and hotel rooms. To find the best ones, you'll probably need to check out vacation rental web sites. So before going any further, decide what type of lodging will work best for your family.  

The major resorts have fantastic pools with slides and swim-up bars, keiki clubs (daytime activities for kids), a variety of dining options from formal restaurants to casual cafes and easy beach access. Choose one of these if your budget is ample and you have no need for an in-room kitchen. The major travel web sites regularly offer great package deals to Hawaii that include reservations at a resort, a rental car and plane fare. You may also find deals listed in the travel section of your newspaper. 

Some condominium units seem just as expensive as the resort rooms, but you get a kitchen and much more space for your money. Condos usually don't have keiki clubs and have only basic pools. Many are close to fine beaches. Condominium units are individually owned and vary widely in terms of decor and maintenance, even within the same complex. To ensure you get a nicely updated and maintained condo unit, you might want to check for a rental by owner rather than using a big travel web site. Search on the Internet using the terms "vacation rental by owner" and the island of your choice. The web sites you find will often include pictures of the units you may rent as well as testimonials from other guests. If you find a unit you like, you may find yourself reserving the same one year after year. 

If you're traveling with a large group, a house rental may suit your needs. You can find vacation house rentals on the Internet. These range from budget options that may require a drive to get to the beach to fabulously luxurious beach mansions. 

Once you've decided on lodging, you can reserve rental cars and plane tickets, if you didn't already get them as part of a package. You'll definitely need a rental car, except possibly on Oahu, which has decent public transportation. You can find direct flights from the mainland to Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the Big Island but to get to Molokai or Lanai you'll have to take an inter-island flight from Oahu or a neighbor island.

BEFORE YOU GO

It's time to escape to paradise. Pack everyone's sunglasses, swimsuits and warm-weather clothing. Don't bother with any formal clothes; even the fanciest restaurants are "aloha casual." Remember that you and your children should wear sunscreen every time you go outside: it's easy to get burned by Hawaii's tropical sun.

Then practice the shaka with your kids: fold your index, middle and ring fingers down while sticking your thumb and pinkie upwards. Shake it around. It's a sign of goodwill, which you'll certainly be feeling once you experience the beauty and aloha of Hawaii.
