The island of Hawaii is probably hands-down the most romantic place in the United States. Thousands of couples make it a destination annually whether planning a honeymoon or taking a much needed get-away for two. Hawaii offers countless activities for couples looking to venture out of their hotel rooms.
Active couples will literally be in paradise. There are a handful of marine sanctuaries that extend snorkeling and SCUBA diving at gorgeous coral reef locations. When it comes to underwater activities, Hawaii truly has the clearest water that is most conducive to diving. Sites such as Kealakekua Bay are filled with absolutely breath taking tropical plants and exotic marine life. Speaking of exotic marine life, swimming with dolphins can be the unique experience. These gentle creatures balance power and playfulness as well as force and grace. The exhilaration of gliding through waves guided by these docile mammals is a once-in-a-lifetime thrill.
Haleakala is one of the largest mountains in the world towering 3,000 feet above sea level. It is a dormant volcano and a true wonder of nature. Biking or hiking during sunrise, sunset or anytime of the day is an amazing and powerful adventure. The hike through lush rain forests and spanning vistas is sure to be very romantic. The view from the top of the volcano is unparalleled. The first site of the crater atop this mountain is a powerful experience.
This island is also known for its world renowned golf courses, which is a perfect sport for a couple to engage in together. Lush green grasses and typographically ideal fairways are why golfing while in Hawaii is idyllic. Some other options for energetic couples popular on the island of Hawaii are parasailing, kayaking, fishing and surfing. For any of these activities, there is a qualified instructor that would be more than happy to get you in the middle of the action. Just like golfing, Hawaii has some of the finest surfing in the world. Since most couples visiting Hawaii are surely surfing novices, most resorts offer lessons and rent surfboards. If the thought of surfing Hawaii's enormous waves makes you nervous, there are many competitions throughout the year that you can attend, leaving the dangerous stuff up to the pros.
The beaches of Hawaii are second to none. Great weather is practically guaranteed. If relaxing during vacation is more your pace, there is no better place to relax than the island of Hawaii. The expanses of powder-soft white sands beckons even the most frazzled vacationer to just lay back and relax. While on the beach, a horseback tour of the island is a perfect way to spend a few hours. Horseback riding allows for a tranquil option to take in the spectacular sights of the island while enjoying these magnificent creatures. In fact, Hawaii is the perfect place to relax, whether strolling down the beach hand in hand or pampering yourself at one of Hawaii's world class spas.
Hungry? The luau is the quintessential Hawaiian experience that can not be missed. A luau is a combination of a cultural celebration and magnificent feast. It is an excellent introduction to Hawaiian tradition and culture. There are performances by hula dancers, knife and fire demonstrations as well as singing and authentic music. The feast has to be seen to be believed. Most of the meat is prepared in and underground oven and usually consists of a roast pig. Tropical delicacies grace every table, from poi to pineapple, taro to tapioca.
There are also fabulous dinner cruises that combine fine dining with spectacular ocean sunset views and night lights of the island. You will be wined and dined with gourmet delicacies as you watch the stars come out. Most cruises let you dance and romance the night away on the spacious dance floors featuring live music and open bars.
If you enjoy being out on the open sea, a whale watching excursion may be right up your alley. In the winter, whales flock to the Hawaiian Islands to mate and give birth. Whales during this time are known to breach, which means jumping and launching themselves into the air. It is a truly magnificent sight to behold! Man-operated catamarans are available to take you out and let you witness this miracle of nature.
The coral reefs surrounding Hawaii are teaming with a wide assortment of beautifully colored plants and fish. For those who would like to see this spectacular underwater display without strapping on SCUBA gear, there is no better viewing vehicle than a submarine or a glass bottom boat. Submarines are exciting because they descend to depths of over 100 ft. below the surface. The view is almost surreal. Most are very comfortable and roomy with plenty of fresh air. You'll appreciate the change in colors as you descend deeper and deeper to the ocean floor. Each dive is different and quite often you'll see large fish cruising in from the ocean depths way off the coast. This activity is perfect for those interested in viewing the wonders of Hawaiian marine life while wanting to stay dry.
Watching a Hawaiian sunset is a soothing way to bid farewell to another day. The spectacular array of colors are caused by the sun passing through the atmosphere. Under the right conditions, just as the sun sinks out of sight, a phenomenon that is fairly unique to Hawaii takes place. It is very rare and in an instant it is over. Just as the last tip of the sun sets below the horizon, streams of light split into something similar to a rainbow. Blue light is at the top and red at the bottom, with green as the other primary color. When the red light dips beyond the horizon and the blue light is being fanned across the sky, a bright flash of green is clearly visible. It can be an incredible way to end an incredible day on the romantic island of Hawaii. |
