When it comes to a romantic choice for a travel destination, many couples don't have much trouble choosing the very tropical and quixotic Hawaii.  What might take a little more time is deciding on which of the Hawaiian Islands to spend your time. If your vacation takes you anywhere near Kailua-Kona, commonly referred to as "Kona," there will be plenty of things to see and do. This town is found on the "big island" of Hawaii.

Start off by planning to enjoy the gorgeous and very romantic Hawaiian sunsets as often as you possibly can. Many restaurants offer seating so that you can do just that, and there are sunset cruises. Whether or not you plan to take in a sunset from a beach, there are numerous beaches on which to spend some of your daytimes if swimming or tanning is on your agenda.

If you and your partner enjoy sailing, you may want to try Dolphin Discoveries. They offer various options including snorkeling, a narrated tour, and exploration of sea caves and lava tubes. As the name suggests, visitors will be able to choose a dolphin watching cruise, or perhaps you would more enjoy looking for whales, which is also an option.

One of the tours you may want to take at Kona is the Hulihe'e Palace. This was the vacation home of Hawaiian royalty and now serves as a museum.  In addition to the exhibits, you may be able to catch one of the concerts of music or hula that is offered monthly. Enjoy the stories of the history of this beautiful palace and let yourself be caught up for a moment in a fantasy world.

There are many places around Kona for all kinds of water related activities including swimming, diving, boating, surfing, etc. If you prefer staying dry for the day, check out one of the golf courses or tennis courses. There are many places to hike and bike here as well.

To visit a place that is different from the hustle and bustle you may find in Kona and other spots on the island, start driving or walking upward for three miles. Three miles up Hualalai Road, that is, and stop at Holualoa Village. You will find many art galleries and shops along with some beautiful scenery.

If you enjoy parasailing or wish to learn, this is an ideal place to do so. The same goes for learning diving, boogie boarding, and surfing, too. The locals will be able to direct you to the best places at which to find these lessons.

Speaking of the locals, it is always a good idea to speak with people living on the island to find out where the best eating establishments are.  Often these are places that aren't heavily advertised and may be overlooked no matter how much research you do ahead of time. Anyone living in Kona should be able to direct you to an excellent luau or the best quiet coffee shop or diner, depending on what it is you wish to find for any given meal.

If you find yourself in need of walking off the effects of that luau, try the "Historic Kailua Village Walking Tour." The tour lasts for more than an hour and you will see, among other things, the first Christian church in the Sandwich Islands (from 1837), the last of government for King Kamehameha, and a restored temple that first existed in the 16th century.

For a special souvenir for yourself or others, be sure to consider the world famous Kona coffee.  In this rich soil, native Hawaiians once grew bananas and sugar cane and today's delicious coffee of the same name is now grown here.

For a special kind of adventure, check out Neptune Charlie's Ocean Safaris. They offer the more "normal" whale watching, scuba, and fishing trips, but something very out of the ordinary, is available here. It is a Manta Ray Night Dive.  You will start this adventure with a twenty minute boat ride and seeing the sunset is part of this package. After a short orientation about what will be happening, you will then be diving to see the Manta Rays.

After you have exhausted the options of things you wish to do in Kona, keep in mind that the ever-exciting city of Honolulu is just a very short six miles away and things to do there, both the daytime activities and the nightlife are endless.
