The island of Hawaii, the biggest in the chain of Hawaiian islands, is commonly referred to simply as the ¡°Big Island.¡± It is the most geographically diverse of the islands, making it the perfect spot for a fun-filled family vacation. With an active volcano, the world¡¯s tallest mountain, and no less than 11 of the 13 different world climates, a trip to the Big Island of Hawaii definitely has something to offer everyone.

One of the most unique experiences to be had on the island is the chance to swim with the dolphins. The Dolphin Quest program is hosted by the Hilton Waikoloa, which occupies 62 acres and also features a huge swimming and snorkeling lagoon and a very kid-friendly beach. One of the world¡¯s largest natural dolphin habitats, Dolphin Quest has special programs for children aged 5 and older, teens and adults, allowing visitors to get up close and personal with these playful creatures. Space is extremely limited, so you should plan on making reservations well in advance to secure your place in the program. First priority is given to children and teens, while adults must be chosen by a lottery system. Once you¡¯re in the water, a team of marine mammal experts guide you through 30 minutes of playing with and learning all about the dolphins. Even if you don¡¯t get the chance to directly participate, it is definitely worth going to see as there is plenty of room for onlookers to observe the dolphins in action.

A great place to view some of the ancient culture of Hawaii is at the Puako Petroglyph Archaeological Preserve. These amazing petroglyph fields contain about three thousand ancient carvings of animals, sea creatures, spears, canoes and even people.  No one knows exactly who made them or why, only that they have been there for a very long time. Kids will find the mystery of these symbols intriguing and you can take a guided tour through the lava beds to view the actual petroglyphs etched into the rock, making it seem like a treasure hunt. It¡¯s great fun to try and find all the different carvings and then see if you can decipher their meaning. Access to the trail is through the Mauna Lani resort, where you can pick up some information on the fields and begin your search. There is even a special area where you can make your own rubbing of the petroglyph figures to take as a souvenir.

Another outdoor wonder that is not to be missed is Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The park is enormous, covering almost 350,000 acres and containing many diverse environments ranging from sea level to the summit of the earth¡¯s most massive volcano, Mauna Loa, at nearly 14,000 feet. Also located at the park is Kilauea, the world¡¯s most active volcano which erupts frequently and emits red-hot ribbons of molten lava. If you time it right, you may even get to see this natural wonder in action.  There are tons of different things to see and do here ¨C over half of the park is designated wilderness and offers a variety of interesting hiking and camping opportunities. You can take a guided tour with one of the rangers or choose to explore the park on your own on one of the many clearly marked trails. There are quite a few short, easy hikes that allow you to experience some amazing sights such as walk-through lava tubes, steam vents, a smoking crater, and the unique lava trees, where lava flows covered trees and then cooled into that shape. These volcanic creations are definitely interesting to see and something kids are sure to enjoy.  The park also offers a Junior Ranger Program designed for kids ages 5 to 12. To participate, simply purchase an activity workbook in the visitor center, join a ranger on a short guided walk and complete different activities in the workbook to earn a ranger badge. 

For a great chance to take a peek at what lies beneath the beautiful blue Hawaiian water, try taking a ride on the amazing Atlantis submarine. This enormous high-tech submarine dives down to over 100 feet below the surface, providing an incredible up-close look at the natural beauty to be found in the ocean. Each dive is unique, offering passengers the chance to see coral reefs, schools of beautiful fish, lobsters, eels, sea turtles and possibly even a reef shark. A narrator delivers an informative presentation on everything you are seeing, from the formation of the islands themselves to the many species of plant and animal life that are unique to the waters around Hawaii. The submarine has rows of viewing windows running down each side and a nearly 5 foot front view port to ensure you don¡¯t miss a thing.

Finally, no visit to the Big Island would be complete without a stop at the famous Parker Ranch. This is the largest privately owned ranch in the United States, with nearly 400 horses and over 50,000 cattle. This working ranch has been around since 1815 and is the home of the Hawaiian cowboy, known affectionately as the ¡°paniolo.¡± These diehard cowboys have worked the ranch for six generations and they offer visitors a behind-the-scenes glimpse at the incredible amount of work it takes to keep a ranch like this running. There are wagon rides, museum tours and two historic homes open for viewing, or if you¡¯re feeling more adventurous you can take a horseback ride through the rolling green hillsides and stone corrals to see the different plants and animals found on the ranch. It¡¯s an amazing experience and provides a real taste of the rugged nature that Hawaii is known for, making it a great way to cap off your visit to the Big Island.
