There are not many cities in the United States that some consider to be the most haunted in the entire nation, but many feel San Diego fits the bill. Although a beautiful city that many native Californians consider to be one of the best places to live in the state, its ¡°Old Town¡± seems to be the site of many hauntings. If you plan on visiting San Diego soon and want to include some spooky time in your itinerary, here are some sites you will not want to miss.

Considered by some to be one of the most haunted sites in the United States, the Whaley House located in San Diego¡¯s ¡°Old Town¡± was built on top of a piece of land that has held more than its share of history. In the land bordering that of the Whaley House, a tribe known as the Kumeyaay spent their winters here, often buying food and goods from the Whaley family. The Kumeyaay population rapidly dropped due to disease and many of them were subsequently buried on a portion of the Whaley property. In addition, a close friend of one of the Whaley children was killed when she ran through a clothesline on the property. In addition, before the Whaley house was built, a criminal named Jim Robinson was hung on the exact piece of land where the house would soon be built. With all this tragedy, there was bound to be some spiritual matter left behind. Some say that Robinson haunts the staircase leading up to the second floor and often guests feel their neck tighten up when ascending the stairs. One of the Whaley children who died from poisoning at an early age is said to appear to children visiting the house and often plays tricks on them like pulling their hair or tickling them. Employees report that the sheets in the master bedroom of the home often appear as if they have been slept on, despite the fact that the rooms no longer house guests. 

Also located in ¡°Old Town¡± is a restaurant called El Fandango Restaurant. Employees and patrons have reported seeing a woman dressed in white Victorian-style clothes who prefers to sit unobtrusively in a table located in the corner of the restaurant. Some have seen her simply floating throughout the restaurant, which was built over the site of a home that burned down in the late 1850s. Unlike other apparitions, this female ghost does not reach out to anybody, but rather stays to herself, most times looking quite sullen. 

A cemetery in ¡°Old Town¡± named El Campo Santo Cemetery is known by locals to have some restless souls. With only 477 reported original gravesites, El Campo is small compared to most cemeteries, but its haunted history is quite diverse. A final resting place to Jim Robinson (whose spirit, some say, haunts the Whaley House mentioned above) and the gravedigger that tended to the cemetery, this site has its share of lurking spirits. In the late 1800s, a path for streetcars was placed on a portion of the cemetery, only to be paved later as a road leaving 18 gravesites buried underneath (which may account for some of the disgruntled spirits).  Many claim to see the spirit of the gravedigger keeping watch over the cemetery, while others have seen a woman dressed in Victorian clothes floating along the southern-facing wall. Those who venture to the cemetery for a closer look report unexplained icy spots throughout the cemetery, while those who leave their cars parked nearby often come back to blaring car alarms turned on by ghostly hands.
