On the campus of Salem State College, the Mainstage Auditorium is thought to be haunted by a young man named Tommy. Back in the 1970s, a group of mischievous teenagers went to the auditorium late one night to mess around on the stage. One of the teenagers, a boy named Tommy, climbed up to the area located above the auditorium and, unbeknownst to his friends, fell to his death on the auditorium floor. Although this area where Tommy fell from has long since been converted to a storage area, it is still thought to be haunted by Tommy¡¯s spirit. His spirit is also blamed for moving things around and making odd noises.
The Salem Marine Society was a mainstay for seafarers since the 1700s. However, when it was torn down to make way for the Hawthorne Hotel, it was felt that the spirits of these ancient seamen still found their way to the original site of the place they frequented. Diners and wait staff at the hotel¡¯s restaurant have reported that a large wheel from a ship that is used for decoration on one of the walls is often seen turning as if it was still on a ship sailing to an unknown destination.
Considered to be one of the oldest cemeteries in Salem, Saint Mary¡¯s Cemetery is also considered to be the most haunted cemetery in all of New England. Many people have heard strange sounds there, including the sound of a dog running on the cement. Witnesses have said that there is a general sense of unease in the cemetery grounds and there is a constant feeling of being watched. While some spirits seem to be a little more playful, the energy at Saint Mary¡¯s Cemetery leans more towards the negative side, making visitors feel unwanted.
One of the movie theaters in Salem, Patriot Cinemas, is known by many locals as a haunted site. Many workers report that one of the rooms in the theater is often cold for no reason and the smell of cigarette smoke often fills the air in a small area of one of the theaters, as if a remnant from times past.
A beautiful red brick building in Salem was once the Danvers State Hospital. In 1990, it closed its doors forever, having served as a sanitarium for many years. Despite being abandoned, however, its lure is still strong. Paranormal investigators often hold seances in the halls and curious ghost hunters are often caught trespassing on the grounds. Visitors to the grounds often describe a negative, almost painful, energy that fills the halls and surrounding areas. Whether it is the energy of spirits still wandering the area or an emotional charge left behind by the hospital¡¯s many suffering patients will never be known. Some witnesses often hear footsteps and doors opening and closing in the halls.
