It is a city packed into the size of a town with famous museums, charming cafes, overwhelming duomos, bustling piazzas and ancient cobblestone streets. With a city that is this full of history, there are bound to be some lingering spirits who grew much too attached to the city to leave forever. Here is an overview of some of Florence¡¯s haunted sites.
Almost every alley and street holds a hotel, or ¡°pensione.¡± The Pensione Burchianti is a charming hotel located in the heart of Florence, but locals have come to feel that it is haunted. Legend has it that Mussolini once stayed in this hotel. It is in this particular room where employees and guests have witnessed a male apparition that is pink in color. Some report that within the room, there is an overwhelming sensation of being watched as well as unexplained cold spots. Elsewhere throughout the hotel is an apparition of a woman knitting in a rocking chair, as well as that of a child spirit that skips through the hallways.
Many feel that the Abbey of Florence is also haunted. This ancient church, whose high altar has paintings done by the famous artist Giotto, is reportedly haunted by the spirit of the famous Italian poet, Dante Alighieri, author of the Divine Comedy. It is said that Dante continues to haunt the abbey in a ceaseless search for the love of his life, Beatrice. She is the woman that he loved and adored in his book the Divine Comedy.
On one side of the Arno River there is a brick structure named Belvedere Fort. Centuries ago, this large structure was used to create a division between rural Florence and the lively city itself. Locals believe there are many paranormal episodes and unexplained events that occur in this area. It was on this distinct area where those women accused of being witches met their fire-filled fate at the stake. There were also many murders and episodes of abuse that occurred on this particular piece of land. Those who are brave enough to visit this area at night often hear unexplained footsteps along the cobblestone streets, despite the fact that the area is otherwise vacant. Strange whispering voices area also heard, and many feel an overwhelming presence lurking in the alleys. In addition, some say they hear the sounds of kids playing and laughing in the streets at odd hours of the night.
In one of the pensiones that is close to the Florence train station, some guests have reported a strange phenomenon. At night, in some of the rooms, there is an overwhelming scent of burning candle wax, much like the smell that is abundant in churches that have many candles lit. According to the history of this particular hotel, the building had once been a monastery and the fourth floor (where this unexplained phenomenon occurs) is where the monks resided. Living the minimal life, they usually had a stool or table with candles upon it, where they would do most of their praying. The smell of the candles has never wavered in this hotel. |
