Charm City earns its name with the wonderful restaurants throughout its many neighborhoods. Baltimore is awash with both trendy and traditional places to eat, from the local pizza place to the newest tapas bar.
The most notable food-centric district is Baltimore*s Little Italy, located downtown. In addition to great restaurants, Little Italy is a cultural neighborhood, with block parties, traditional marble front stoops, and families who idle summer evenings away outside their row home. Sabatino*s restaurant, in the center of Little Italy, is a true Baltimore tradition, one so embedded in history that the dining room has a near-retro feel. Most of the waitresses are over 50 years old, but, no matter their age, they all still wear the traditional black and white serving dresses with orthopedic shoes. With this environment comes true Italian food. Do not expect cutting-edge gourmet plates, but do prepare yourself for Italian like your grandmother would make it. At Sab*s 每 as the locals sometimes call it 每 there is no formal dress code; jeans and a nice shirt would be entirely acceptable.
If you would prefer a fine dining experience while in Little Italy, make reservations at Boccaccio. Whereas Sabatino*s has family cuisine in a comfortable atmosphere, Boccaccio is an elegant restaurant. It boasts a true Italian chef with an artist*s mentality, a passion for his food, and a classic rotund stomach to prove it. Before sitting at your table, treat yourself to a drink at the bar. Boccaccio employs a traditional bartender with an elegant demeanor, steady hand, and charming wit. Men should wear a jacket at Boccaccio, and women should dress equally as nice.
Continuing with continental food, Baltimore has an excellent French bistro, Pettit Louis. Located about ten minutes from downtown, Petit Louis has perfectly mimicked the atmosphere and ambiance of French bistros across the pond. The coloring, lighting, design, and, of course, the menu are exceptionally well done. The food and wine are somewhat expensive 每 rarely do you find a family-oriented French restaurant 每 but the experience is exceptional. Many stellar wines are offered by the glass, and the staff is trained to suggest excellent food pairings. The dress code is varied but always trendy: men should wear a jacket or collared shirt, and women should dress to the best of their discretion.
On the opposite end of the spectrum from Petit Louis is Michael*s Pizza downtown. As you walk into this tiny hole-in-wall, you notice the numerous articles written about the small pizzeria over the years. Although the atmosphere evokes a well-worn New York City pizza parlor, the pies live up to the press. As fitting with the atmosphere, the dress code is nonexistent. Brace yourself for fast-talking waitresses and plenty of locals.
A Chinese food craving can be solved at Joey Chiu*s, located in a high-end shopping center. While most Chinese food establishments have mostly take-out and maybe a few tables, Joey Chiu*s is an excellent restaurant in and of itself. It has all the Asian-food staples, as well as some of its own dishes that are equally as good. Be sure to dress nicely, but no specific dress code is followed.
The Prime Rib is Baltimore*s best steak restaurant, filled with old Baltimore families and lush surroundings. While its entrance is somewhat understated, its reputation and food are legendary. Expect to see political hobnobbing amongst bar guests as the owner floats around the restaurant with a martini and cigar in hand. The Prime Rib demands a jacket from all its male patrons, and women dress equally as posh.
If in Baltimore, you must try a Baltimore crab cake. Some of the best seafood can be found at Mama*s on the Half Shell in a neighborhood called Canton. Located in one of the new trendy districts of Baltimore, it is the sister restaurant to Nacho Mama*s located next door. Both are famous in Baltimore for their local lure 每 the owner has built his popularity through friends, family, and charisma, not mass marketing or corporate ideals. Canton also has a great amount of nightlife with its bar-lined main drag. Since the area is young and trendy, any outfit goes, just dress to have a good time.
For an ultra-trendy experience, go to Pazzo, Baltimore*s hottest tapas bar. The small plates are excellent and truly satisfying despite their size, and the specialty drinks are one-of-a-kind. You can sit at one of the sofas surrounding coffee tables, or opt for a comfortable, intimate booth. The open, two-floor layout makes it the place to see and be seen, so dress like a rock-star out for casual drinks.
Whether you choose to dress up or go casual, the variety of restaurants in Baltimore will certainly please any pallet. Although reservations are not required for the more casual restaurants, it is always a good idea to call ahead to double-check location and business hours.
