Atlanta, Georgia is one of those vibrant cities that seems to pulse with a life of its own. From its famous sports teams to the downtown headquarters of one of the most respected news channels in the nation to its vast cultural diversity, Atlanta is not a city to be missed during one¡¯s lifetime travels. Whether you are visiting for the normal tourist adventure or for one that is a bit more paranormal, Atlanta is definitely the city for you. Should you wish to include a few haunted sites in your otherwise busy itinerary, here are a few you will not want to overlook.
Want to get whisked back in time when you could dine on a traditional English meat pie and down it with a glass of ale while watching good, live Shakespearean theatre? Then you will definitely want to visit The New American Shakespeare Tavern where you can watch some of the Bard¡¯s plays as they were meant to be watched. The Shakespeare Tavern, however, has an extensive haunted history with reports of unexplained apparitions and voices reported by employees, actors and guests alike. Many claim that the spirit of a young boy dressed in the fashion of the late 1800s lurks in the actors¡¯ dressing room, while a female spirit seems to inhabit the actresses¡¯ dressing room, often moving things around. There have also been reports of a figure that often walks along the stage¡¯s catwalk at night.
In 1797, a home was built in over a hundred miles east of Atlanta to house the Pope family. It was transported to Atlanta years later and now houses an upscale restaurant named Anthony¡¯s. With such a rich history, many claim the restaurant to be haunted. In fact, many employees refuse to work in the house alone, while some have simply upped and quit after feeling a presence watch them as they worked. Some claim that the spirit of a woman named Annie Barnett who lived in the home during the late 1800s haunts the main staircase and can often be heard walking up and down the staircase at night. Lights often flicker in certain parts of the house and strange voices can often be heard when nobody is around.
On the northern outskirts of Atlanta, in a suburb named Dunwoody is an old home built in 1870 known to locals as the old Donaldson house. Built by William James Donaldson, its current residents feel that his presence as well as that of his third wife can still be felt throughout the home. WJ, as he is known, has been felt throughout the hallway where the current residents feel he monitors the home, making sure it is always well taken care of. An apparition of a young girl is often seen looking out the window of the current residents¡¯ child¡¯s room, and an old Bible belonging to the family is often seen levitating and falling to the floor. Guests and residents of the home also often hear music emanating from a room in the home where visiting parsons often stayed in. Many have also heard unexplained footsteps and felt cold spots throughout various parts of the house. |
