Pennsylvania is a state rich in history. It is home to the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall in Philadelphia, the encampment at Valley Forge, Lancaster County's Amish Country, the battlefield at Gettysburg, and numerous stops along the Underground Railroad.

Ghost hunters believe that Pennsylvania's ties with history include more than just its artifacts. Throughout the state are sites reputed to be haunted, and the tales of these hauntings are both entertaining and chilling.

Town by town, let's explore some of Pennsylvania's more well-known haunted places.

Gettysburg

Some ghost hunters believe that Gettysburg, Pennsylvania may well be the most haunted place in America. The site of one of the most notable battles of the Civil War, countless sightings have been reported in and around Gettysburg of fallen soldiers who still walk the streets that were once bloody battlefields.

Indiana

Indiana, in southwestern Pennsylvania, is home to Eliza Furnace. This well preserved iron furnace is said to be haunted by the ghost of David Ritter, who had hanged himself in the furnace's entrance. Ritter's ghost is said to appear frequently in that same entrance, dangling on the end of a ghostly noose. 

Johnstown

The Johnstown Incline Plane is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the "steepest vehicular inclined plane in the world." The incline is said to be haunted by the ghosts of some coal miners, some still holding their lunch buckets, who were killed when a mine near the incline collapsed in 1902.

New Hope

New Hope is a quaint, artistic community on the Delaware River in Bucks County, in southeastern Pennsylvania. New Hope boasts a number of allegedly haunted sites, the most famous of which is the Logan Inn. The bodies of numerous dead soldiers were said to have been stored at the Logan Inn during the Revolutionary War. It is said that those soldiers still inhabit the inn, and are frequently spotted, still in uniform, by the inn's employees and guests. It is also believed that the ghost of Aaron Burr, who visited the Inn shortly after his duel with Alexander Hamilton, can sometimes be seen at the Logan Inn.

Also in New Hope, the Wedgwood Inn is said to be haunted by the ghost of a 12-year-old ex-slave girl named Sarah, who had stayed at the inn during her escape to the north in the 19th century via the Underground Railroad. Over the years, Sarah's ghost has appeared to at least three 12-year-old girls who stayed at the inn at different times. Sarah's ghost allegedly told the young girls her story of slavery, escape, and hiding. The young witnesses' individual accounts of Sarah's story have been nearly identical.

Patton

Patton, in central Pennsylvania, is the site of the Seldom Seen Mine. Three robbers, who were hiding out in this coal mine with their treasures, are believed to have died when the mine collapsed in the early 1900s. It is said that you can sometimes hear the phantom robbers digging for their lost treasures deep within the mine.

Philadelphia

The Eastern State Penitentiary is Philadelphia's most famous haunted site. Once home to notorious gangster Al Capone, this now-abandoned prison is said to be haunted by the ghosts of numerous prisoners who died there, as well as a phantom guard who is frequently spotted in one of the guard towers.

Also in Philadelphia is the City Tavern, where the drinks are not the only spirits on hand. A former waiter, who was killed while on the job, is said to haunt the City Tavern. There, place settings move around and rattle, and the ill-fated waiter, in his bloody white shirt, is occasionally spotted briefly before disappearing just as quickly.
