The state of New York has a very colorful and extensive history.  It is the first place many immigrants saw when they arrived at Ellis Island and its harbor is graced with the beauty of the Statue of Liberty.  It is only reasonable, considering the important place the state holds within our country¡¯s history, that some of those participants in that history linger on past their normal lives.

A well-known mystery and haunting is in Big Moose Lake, within the Adirondack Mountains.  Grace Brown traveled with her fianc¨¦e to the lake in the hope that he would ask her to marry him.  She was pregnant at the time and had been asking him for several months to do the right thing and marry her.  Her fianc¨¦e, Chester Gilette, liked his freedom and his womanizing and did not want to commit to one woman.  He drowned Grace and then eventually was tried and executed for the murder.  In the cabin they stayed in before Chester ended Grace¡¯s life, it is said the woman still lingers.  She can be occasionally be seen in the form of apparitions on the lake or re-enacting her drowning.  Her presence can also be felt like a cold hand.

At the Ancestors Inn at the Bassett House, the original owners are believed to still roam the property.  Hannah and George Bassett enjoy turning the lights on and off in their old bedroom, to the chagrin of the current occupants.  They also like to play jokes on visitors by taking cameras and other personal property.  More often than not, the cameras are not returned and the visitors leave without their property.  It is also known that taking pictures within the house will often yield a blank roll of film.  It seems as the Bassetts do not want their home photographed and will go to great lengths to prevent these pictures from being seen.

There are uncounted stories of a ¡°lady in white¡± throughout the state.  This is a recurring description, though the locations vary and the story is different for each site. 

At the Aurora Inn off route 90, there is a ghost named the White Lady that haunts the hotel and lobby.  She is believed to have fallen victim to a fire in an old building that burned on the shore of Cayuga Lake, along with two men.

On Octagon Farms, an unlucky bride can be seen riding around on a horse that bucked her shortly after her wedding.  The horse is also white.  The two can be seen late at night.

On the front lawn of the Belhurst Castle, a woman in white can be seen standing silently in the night.  She is believed to be the spirit of an Italian opera singer who was killed in a secret tunnel trying to leave with her lover.

The Lady in White, or Mary, of Sweet Hollow Road has three stories around her.  It is not known which of them is true.  The first one has her being thrown from a vehicle by a jealous boyfriend and then being hit by another car that did not see her.  The second story is of her being a witch who was hung in the late 1600's.  The final story tells of a night in the 1920's when she was hit while walking home.  Whatever the truth is, Mary likes to jump in front of passing vehicles and frighten the drivers.

Jefferson Middle School in Jamestown has their own lady in white.  Their ghost is a little girl in a white dress who wanders the halls looking for her brother.  

In Lafayette, near the One-Way Bridge, there is a story of a woman in a white gown.  Nothing is known of this woman or why she is there.  When she is seen, she is said to disappear shortly thereafter.

At the Long Island Campground near Lake George, back in the 1960's, a young newlywed couple was murdered in their sleep.  The bride can still be seen in her white wedding dress wandering the campsite, searching for her husband.

The surrounding woods of Plattsburgh Air Force Base have a lady dressed in white.  She is believed to have been killed by a robber.

The American Museum of Moving Images in Queens is visited by a black woman in a white dress.  She is seen behind the security desk at night.

The police department in Rochester has record of a girl being raped and murdered.  A lady in white searches through the Durand Eastman Park/Beach for her daughter.  While the story varies, it can be confirmed by documentation in the Irondequoit libraries and the police department.

At the Mill House in Stony Brook, in an abandoned house, a woman in white can be seen walking the length of the top floor with a candle.

On Onondaga Hill, also called ¡°13 Curves¡± in Syracuse, a newlywed couple was killed in an auto accident about seventy years ago.  Stories of a woman in a white gown searching for her husband in the woods are told.

On the balcony of the Landmark Theatre in Syracuse, a lady in white has been seen for many years.  She likes to stand quietly looking out from the balcony.

At Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, a lady in white is seen walking the halls of what nice was a hospital before being turned into a classroom building for the institute.  It is believed the ghost is that of a nurse that was killed trying to save children in the hospital from a fire.  She is well liked by the current occupants who jokingly ask for the lights to be turned off so that she may walk the halls in dark.

New Michigan Road in Victor was the site of a carriage accident that killed a woman and her husband.  During the full moon, the lady in white can be seen searching for her husband on the road.

Seeing the haunted places of New York State can be very entertaining and informative to the history of our country.  Go with caution though.  Some of the properties are private and will require permission before being entered.  Also, some places are inhabited by spirits and ghosts that are not so friendly to those who are still living.  Never go alone.
