It's no surprise that New York City is the "city that never sleeps". Who could sleep in a city with so many ghosts roaming around in its streets? I am a native New Yorker and even I get chills at the thought of the paranormal history that took place in my home city.
I can't say I'm shocked. New York City is old enough. The minute you set foot on a Manhattan street you just know there is something different about where you're standing.
I guess ghosts might be the difference.
The first story I came across took place in the Chelsea Hotel. This place has been no stranger to the unfamiliar and bizarre. In the past it has been reported that drug dealers, addicts, prostitutes and pimps who were murdered or hurt used to stay at this hotel. It is rumored that while staying there you acquire the emotions of those who haunt it. A person might feel a sadness not normally felt. During a walk down the hallway here, you will feel like you're being watched or someone is following you.
New York University is another place that is known to have a presence lingering within its walls. In the Brittany Residence Hall there are reports of phantom music playing. People say they see lights and hear footsteps or feel a presence watching them. Others feel the basement seems rather like a maze, where they can't find their way through.
At the Clinton Street Brownstone, it seems there is a little girl who still lurks in the shadows.
Even John Lennon likes to make an appearance at the Dakota apartment building. They say he likes standing outside the building, where he was shot.
The New Amsterdam Theatre is said to shelter a Ziegfield Follies chorus girl, Olive Thomas, who committed suicide. She is usually seen carrying a blue bottle, holding the poison that killed her. Workmen say they saw her in the dressing room as they did repairs on the theatre. Others say they've seen her on the stage.
One If By Land, Two If By Sea Restaurant is said to have more that one ghost visiting. However the only one that seems to have been recognized is the original owner's daughter, Theodosia Burr Alston who disappeared in North Carolina on her way to visit her father in New York. Several woman sitting in the restaurant report that their earrings have been popped off by Theodosia.
At the City College of New York there have been many reports made by students and faculty members since the 1920s. People noticed apparitions dressed in dated clothing from the early 1900s, 1960s and 1970's. These ghosts have been found haunting one of the former political club lounges in Shepherd Hall.
There is a house downtown at 14 West 10th Street that is supposedly haunted by more than 22 people who have died there. Even the famous author, Mark Twain is said to be part of these apparitions. He is seen on the stairwell.
The ghost of noted Poet, Dylan Thomas is said to haunt the White Horse Tavern on West 11th Street, where he collapsed and died after drinking approximately 18 shots of scotch in 1953. They say he returns to rotate his favorite corner table as he did before he passed away.
Washington Square Park is said to have been haunted since the American Revolution, when the trees that are still standing today were used as a hanging ground. There are 15,000 bodies still buried beneath its grassy lawn.
George Frederick Cooke, who was buried headless, frequents the grave at St. Paul's Chapel. Cooke's spirit roams through the churchyard searching for his missing head.
The Morris-Jumel Mansion, the oldest home in the city, is reported to be haunted by three spirits. Eliza Jumel, mistress of the mansion, is said to roam the house in a purple dress, tapping on the walls and windows. There is a young servant girl whom supposedly killed herself that haunts the servant quarters. A painting depicting a soldier from the American Revolution that hangs in the mansion is said to come alive.
Lastly, Ground Zero, where the World Trade Center used to stand, has been a source of many reported hauntings, as well. People say they have seen the spirits of victims, workers and rescuers. Some have said they hear some apparitions still crying for help.
